Door top mouldings for Targa - ally or brass?

Post by deano »

Can anyone validate, or otherwise, my assertion that the door-top mouldings for all long-nose Targa's were all (heavy) bright chrome-plated brass, and were never ever ever ever supplied as satin finished aluminium please?

Same goes for the subsequent impact bumper Targa's and cabrio's - they were were all brass, and either chrome or (later) painted black?

I think, only the coupes used the aluminium variants. Satin first, and then later black anodised for the SC models - is that right?

Possibly, the Targa/Cabrios had to continue to use the brass so that the finish could be made to match the pressed-steel Targa/cabrio rear window mouldings, which could only be painted or bright chrome-plated (cannot be anodised obviously, and difficult to match to satin aluminium).

Unfortunately, I have purchased Targa/Cabrio-specific 'chrome mouldings' for my 73 Targa from d911, but they actually turned out to be satin aluminium.

Serves me right for being cheap and buying repros, because they were faster and cheaper than chrome-plating my originals

I think you will find that even the Genuine Porsche are alloy now, not chrome plated. Went through this with my full resto 5 years ago. If you want them to match, get your old ones rechromed

Thanks for sharing your insight.

On further inspection, all of the the 911 door mouldings on the d911 website are referred to as being 'chrome' or 'black'.

Clearly, satin aluminium should not be referred to as chrome - this is just misleading!

Technically speaking, to avoid confusion, the black versions should perhaps be referred to as black 'anodised' I think, to distinguish them from 'painted' black versions (though I'm not sure if the later Targa door mouldings were painted black or not - I thought there were because the adjacent rear window mouldings are pressed steel and can only be painted or chrome plated).

Early black trims were anodised, later ones are powder coated.

Many sites list them as chrome, some list them as aluminium, Stoddards have it correct, Bright Anodized Door Trim

Anyhow, they wont be chrome! BTDT

As was suggested below, it looks like the aluminium mouldings are the only ones available as new, and are being incorrectly described as chrome everywhere one looks.

Just because just about everyone refers to them as chrome, doesn't make it true!

This is how it was described on d911: Door outer moulding trim, Chrome. Porsche 911 65-83 Targa / Cabrio (90153143141/241).

I waited a long time for them too: ordered 25th Oct, received 16th Jan.

Amusingly, the chap there told me that he would describe them as 'chrome-effect', as if they were justified in describing them as chrome.

Just in case you are wondering why the aluminium ones won't work, it is because the adjacent rear Targa window moulding are chrome-plated.

Have to wait in line now for chrome-plating my own now, another 6-9 months!!

Never mind ey, its only a car

Had the same issue with design 911 when they said a 23mm brake master cylinder would be correct for a 1971 car - ordered it, fitted it, made the pedal rock hard, then would not entertain any refund or acceptance, that was nothing was wrong with it, when it should have been a 19mm one. My fault I suppose, but these are the people that are meant to know what correct part to supply, and trust their knowledge base?

d911 replied to my 'return' request email today, including telling me that 'we feel our current description to be suitable' but they will pass my comments onto their product manager for further review.

Sad really, when they cannot understand the significant difference between chrome and satin aluminium finishes..
