My friend ran a manual S2 as his main car from 95-140k miles from maybe 2014-2018 or so.

He reckons he broke even to almost the £ (he had a spreadsheet…) on running costs vs appreciation, about £2k a year on average. It was basically very reliable and he got 22mpg over its time with him (also on the spreadsheet).

He sold the car to one of the Bremont watch brothers and it was still going well when he last spoke to him:

I believe they mainly got that reputation because, contrary to the 911, for a long time the 928 were unloved, old cars and often owned by people who couldn't afford proper maintenance. If you keep on top of things, do preventive maintenance and drive it very regularly you should be fine.

BTW, I really love the colour combination of your car!

BTW I think you are quite right about the rear latch insert. In fact, if I'm reading this pic correctly, it's not only worn out - it has disintegrated completely or otherwise disappeared. Hopefully that's one nice easy fix...

That insert should be replaced in any case. Can you hear the electric motor when you pull the release button? If so, you're probably lucky and it's a really easy fix

Very cool car! I had a 78 928 and a GT....the GT was a hoot. Man they drink fuel like nothing else. Very easy to achieve single figure mpg with mild application of accelerator!!

I have got to say I have consistently never liked any brown interior on a car….just not my thing…..but this….its a game changer…..looks amazing…..looking forward to seeing it in the flesh…..reckon that drive we have promised to do together….got to be the E Type…and this……

So, quick first impressions following a first drive in Yorkshire, visit to the in-laws, night-time into Leeds, then home to Surrey. 300-odd miles in an unknown quantity.

Facts:
Did not break down
LH mirror glass fell out but was saved by its heating wires
Coolant low warning came on (.... never a happy moment....) but was a gnat's low. Topped up and no movement since.
Other than that a few minor niggles but nothing interesting (so far!)

More subjectively:
It's an epic thing.
Weather not amazing and bits of snow and ice in places, so I was not testing the limits of adhesion. Dab of oppo impressions are not available. But a pleasant and communicative companion over the moors on A and B roads. Steering heavy (good). Brakes excellent (good). Gets thumbs up from random road users (and the police).

Looks very cool in railway arch hotel car parks....

On motorways and fast A roads it's close to perfect (for me). At first I didn't think it was very quick, but at some point realised two things:
1) Long travel throttle pedal with quite firm resistance. And every mm does something... just utterly lovely - you can potter around in 4th in town with little tiny throttle inputs, then when you use the other 80% of the travel it takes off quite convincingly. BTW it's not short of torque and the drivetrain is very smooth, so 30-max (obvs not tried max) in 5th gear is perfectly fine. Max is allegedly 170-ish...
2) Speedo reads exactly gps speed. Not Audi "add 10% for luck" speed.

Oh yes, one other unexpected stat. Mpg for the collection and run home was 24.2 (measured properly). Nice surprise.
