Re: 1987 3.2 Carrera Backdate project - Sladeys hotrod
Quite a bit more space, but would it fit? (I taped some cardboard to the front of the condenser as it’s easy to push the fins in)
Hmmmm
Nope.
The main problem is that I’ve got a backdate but with the non-s bumper. If it was still impact bumper or if I’d got the s bumper then it would extend down a bit lower and I could feasibly have got a decent fit.
Having the wheel arch liner as non-negotiable, combined with the other factors means this location isn’t going to work.
All is not lost. I did a bit of sniffing around on pelican and on classic retrofits own forum and found some people has mounted them in the rear wing.
Down to the back
Yep, this looks a lot better.
I could mount it facing in or out - not sure which is better.
I don’t know if it’s more important to have air in front, behind the fan, or generally all round.
I decided to order some 1.5 mm sheet stainless to make brackets, so it’s not going any further until that has arrived.
I’ll report again when we get down to bracketry. In the meantime I tidied up the fittings for the fuel expansion tank in the front wing - it was a bit wobbly before

The simple things you see are all complicated
I look pretty young but I'm just backdated yeah

Re: 1987 3.2 Carrera Backdate project - Sladeys hotrod
Just a thought..
Every car I've had with A/C has the road air stream on the face of the condenser rad, then the fan behind that and then the 'hot' air escapes away to wheel well or similar.
My Boxster has 2 rads for the A/C mounted this way, but i have no idea how critical the air flow is to the general function.
Rear wing looks very enclosed to me, but presumably works over in the USA?
You will have to run the rad tubes a fair way if at the back?
Perhaps a tweak to the inner arch shield is not so bad?

Hmm challenging. Got to be honest with the rear liner back in its almost in a sealed box.
What about a front mount like an RSR oil cooler and doing this to your front bumper?

… or have the fan nearest to the engine, providing a little more protection for the condenser against stones thrown Up911hillclimber wrote: ↑Wed Jan 10, 2024 3:21 pm Just a thought..

Do not know if any of this will help, but again, might be restricted due to your want of the wheel arch liners?

Re site the battery and use that space it occupied for the air con rad and fan?

Is there room next to the gearbox? It gets quite a lot of air, can be easily ducted and easier to plumb the pipework. I ran an oil cooler next to my albeit smaller 902 box in the 914/6 and it worked well

The Boxster layout is neat.
The air flows through the rad, through the fan and passes into the leading face of the front wheel arch on both sides of the nose.
I needed to remove the inner arch protectors last year and the rads were perfect.
Little rubbish will get into that area/space and the rad will stand a chance of cooling the content.
Or fit an S front bumper?

Re: 1987 3.2 Carrera Backdate project - Sladeys hotrod
Thanks for the responses guys
I could do with comments from Jonny really - I’ll perhaps PM him
Responding to some of the comments
I can’t do a front airdam/singer as there isn’t room unless I do some major surgery - also the condenser is too square for that - it would suit something more oblong
Resite the battery - basically that would put it in another box (the frunk) - unless you did a vent in the inner wing - again major surgery and quite a structural part
Rear wing being a box - not really
On this pic you have an idea of the gap below
And here is a pic from the other side with the arch liner in place
In addition to that there is a fair gap above the arch liner and I was considering punching louvres into the arch liner as well.
On the idea of adjusting the arch liner at the front - I’d basically have to have it protruding through it and the danger then is the wheel rubbing. I think the condenser is forced rearward by the slope of the non-S bumper
I don’t want an S bumper either

Can you source a slightly smaller condenser to get it inside the front arch?
The one you have doesn’t look huge already so you’d lose some efficiency, but maybe less than closing it in at the back of the car.

Didn't Jonny have it mounted the other side of the rear arch, i.e. near the rear light box. Kinda like the oil tank location? The backdate rear bumper/valance might scupper things again as it's not as deep as an IB rear valance, so your condenser might stick out like on the front.

Also condensers aren't mega money, maybe a different width/height ratio might fit better for your application?

I did manage (just) to get one to fit in the front arch of a backdate but it was very tight and it had an S bumper.

That’s his oil cooler. He has twin aircon condensers up frontNige wrote: ↑Thu Jan 11, 2024 2:32 pm Didn't Jonny have it mounted the other side of the rear arch, i.e. near the rear light box. Here is a pic of my Tiptronic aircon condensers- they match the rad size and are pretty big (sorry bumper on and car finished so can’t measure) but would say prob 12-14” square. However, agree two smaller ones could work in the confines of your arches
