Which Tyre??

Post by 70sThrowback »

Sorry about this as I know this has been done to death, but........... I currently have 14" Fuchs on my 912E and have decided to change the wheels. I was originally looking at 15" steelies and bought a couple off here, but I have now had a change of plans and am going to buy some gas burners. These are 15 x 5.5J. Tyre size wise from my reading and recommendations on here I will go with 195/65's. Looking on Black Circles, there are plenty of choices, out of the ones I would recognise the best seems to be Michelin P1 Cinturato. Does anyone have any other recommendations please.

Thanks
Jonny

.

Personally I think 195/65 tyres would be a bit too wide on a 5.5J wheel - I'd go for 165 x15 or 175/70 x 15 ...

Hi Andy, I did have a look and it said min 5" max 6", but I am open here to personal recommendations. what was the 165? 165/70?
Thanks

I think '76 912E cars were originally equipped with 5.5J x 14 wheels so I'd keep those. I think the OE tyre size was 185/80 R14 (185 HR 14)

I have the originals on, they are 14" fuchs. The issue is tyre availability and extortionate cost of anything that isn't a van tyre. Hence I am going 15's (for me 16" are too big on a narrow body). I've already bought the new wheels, so it wasn't a which wheel debate. I was looking for recommendation based on experience for 195/65's. I know guys that have got 205's on there 5.5J. I think i'll stick with my gut and go for the Michelin P Cinturato's. Thanks all for the input though, its always appreciated.

I've run both Blockley 185/70x15 and Vredestein 195/65x15 on 5.5J wheels. Certainly no problem with either of them...

I 'think' they were Vredestein Sportrac - I have Dunlop 195/65x15 Sport BluResponse on the 914's spare road wheels. Not had any experience with the Michelins, I'm afraid.

Hi Jonny
Big Fan of the Brockley 165 X 15 (on my 550 'rep'), surprisingly good in the wet, not that it goes out in the rain that much!

All the best.

I fitted brockleys to the front of my 356 for the hill climb. Excellent service from Brockleys. Tyres are good too and better value than some of the other classic offerings
