165VR15 tires for 1968 911

Post by Dougal Cawley »

Hi

in 1968 the low profile tyre hit the streets. Dunlop did it with the SP Sport Aquajet on a Jaguar XJ6 and Pirelli did it with the 911 and the Cinturato CN36.

I actually think Pirelli were the first with 60% profile tyres when they made the 215/60R15 CN36 for the RS in 1973, or i beleive it might actually have been right at the very end of 1972.

without doubt the CN36 is a great tyre.

Not all Porsche at the time moved onto 185/70VR15 tyres. a car is still nicer to drive on a thinner tyre, as long as your car can present it to the road wider tyres can give more grip, but the are nicer to drive on a thinner tyre so some of the Porsche at the time instead of going up in tyre size continued with 165R15 tyres so it is nice that Pirelli have just made anothe batch of the 165VR15 CN36 which are on the shelf again.
