Re: What did you do in/on/for your Porsche today?
Exactly the method i proposed!
I think this car has been converted to G50 transmission.
Doddle of a job...
Knapmann will be on the tools very soon!
Tricky bit is finding the centre line of the car as this tube is key to chassis alignment.
When i did my 73T in '89 I used a simple plumb bob (3 in fact) to establish the truth longitudinally down to the garage floor and came off that.
There is a great diagram somewhere giving the dimensions of the early shell and the tolerances used by the factory.
You may have it Gary?
This is it, but not big enough
This might help find the centre line of the car, simple triangulation of known datum points.
Obviously a cellette jig is the quickest/accurate way, but v expensive.

knapmann,
When you said the tubes were re-inforced from 1973 onwards (the PET catalogue does list a different part number for '73), I thought you meant thicker-walled tube.
The '73RS and maybe '74RS got this plate, as pictured below, on top of the rear tunnel tying to the torsion tube. But standard '73 models (non-RS) did not have this.
For standard 911, there were no braces until model year '74 but it was a not plate like the RS, but instead it were two little pieces as per your picture (first one) with the highlighted red rectangle.
Anyway, I think the main culprit is the factory welds (mounts for trailing arms) as they are stress raisers.
If you look at the chassis (tubular spaceframe) of old Formula Ford cars of 1980s and 90s (e.g. Van Diemen) you will see the joints were of bronze-brazing type. More info:

Thanks for the quote from the late great Grady Clay. RIP.knapmann wrote: ↑Tue Aug 22, 2023 11:28 pmI will qoute Grady Clay from the link that is available above regards Tube failure
"Thank you for bringing this issue to the forefront.
This is a problem every early car faces.
Porsche learned a lot over the years but the most significant improvement came with the ‘73RS and RSR.
With these cars Porsche (first?) reinforced the center of the torsion bar tube to the chassis at the rear end of the tunnel.
Not only did this transmit the cornering loads from the trailing arms (‘bananas’) but it also provided an additional path for the torsion bar (spring) loads.
This was continued with every production 911 from 1974."

Drove for 5.5 hours northway for a family wedding. Another 3 hours tomorrow. The 914 is made for this touring. Graham will be happy to know I'm going over 25mpg and I'm not hanging around. I decided to run quite high tyre pressures 34/35. I think they worked for motorway driving. The drive through the Lake District never disappoints
Unfortunately, the front of the boot lid and engine grill have interfered. Lifting up the engine lid. Makes closing the lid a pain.

Finally got to it in the light. The black grill has been lifted up by the boot lid. Ive bent it back a bit. Look like the lid has moved a little away from the rear window (compared to the other side). There looks like the bolt attaching it underneath, to hinge, takes an Allen key but I didn't bring one

Drove to Dundee. It's hard to surpass the scenery here. Particularly when the sun is out. The 914 is made for these roads. The engine comes alive after 3k and so much grip. I was following another car that was pushing on so could see where they braking and they where clearing the road ahead. Mrs asked me to slow down and stopped the fun. Still a drive to take to the grave

Back home. Oil and filter change. The 914 did us proud

Agreed - looks very clean, with good door gaps.

Changed the gearbox oil to mineral from synthetic. Note some fur on the magnetic despite only being changed before our trip to Scotland. The changing does feed better but still needs a bit of a push to move into some of the gears?
Then I used a door latch and some magnets to fashion a less intrusive mobile phone holder

Took for a test drive. Changing gears better and running better now that I corrected the mixture on one carb. I had it much too rich. Idle stable at 1k and pulling better

Thrashed the living daylights out of the Lola over the weekend, no pb but enough to come second in class (yes, 7 in the class, not 2!)
Car went really well as it does at Prescott, lots of bends, few fast straights.
Engine epic at 8,000
