Engine reassembly time?

Was wondering how long to put an engine back together if all the parts are either refurbished or new?as in case refurbished,crank and rods rebuilt,heads rebuilt new pistons ect ect,just looking for a quote to put one together,2.2 T engine

If the prep is 100% and you have experience / correct tools about 10 to 12 hours, engine assy, all ancillaries and tinware imho and experience of 4 x 911 rebuilds.

Lot of time doing the heads if they needed everything, but you say the heads are done prior to this rebuild.

Think you might need a real life experience from someone that has had a Porsche engine builder build there engine and have the the wallet scars to prove it.

If they are quoting 10-12 hours i will get mine re-built every couple of years...!

If you’ve done loads before, everything fits first time, you have all the right shims, and the heads are already built, the crank doesn’t seize when you tighten the case, no threads pull and the cam timing doesn’t fight you to the death…

And that’s assuming everything is clean, Otherwise add another 3 days

The plan is to ask a professional shop/shops for a quote and was just curious how long it might take before I start making calls,the case has been done by EB motorsport and the heads and cam housings were restored rebuilt by Canford Classics,still a few bits to get but just wanted to know how long to reassemble

I would have a fund of at least a weeks wages for the engine builder. Having had an engine re-built and also having had several close friends having this done by a pro you will find they will spend at least a day going over everything others have done. Expect them to back some parts others have so called "refurbed " as not to there standards. The horses mouth has spoken...!

That is a very good point made.
The guy who rebuilds and hands it over as Done, carries the warranted claim that might be the fault of another's refurb. (no matter who the specialist is).
Some pros might refuse the job.

As Gary and I have said, the heads have a lot of hours in them and a fair expense and specialist actions.

My last engine was modified to twin plug, machined by a pro shop and i did all the rest. They took days to clean and lap and shim.

You can only save time by being very methodical and organised.

A good guide to DIY times is given in the excellent Dempsey rebuild book.

Way back, Bob Watson told me 2 weeks to strip, clean measure and machine.
2 weeks to clean measure (after machining etc) and prepare for assembly and the actual build.

I suspect a pro engine builder will want to earn the high side of £50K and year.

Taking a used engine as a starting point, to strip, clean (or discard if you know parts are being replaced) measure, arrange and programme mange the specialist work by others, check and measure the returned work, dummy build of crankcase and crank to measure bearing clearances etc, clean again, then reassemble, doing items such as valve spring shims, cc'ing the heads and so on, estimate for 100-120 hours. Add to this if you wish to refurbish carbs/injection parts, chromating and plating, powder coating and so on.
