I couldn't figure out how to remove the pins. I expected the pins to have locking springs but no. I gave them a tap but they didn't move. Do I screw in? I didn't have much time but looking at the photo now looks like the pins are a bolt?

They are a pressure fit. You knock them out from the smallest pin side (on you right of the photo)
When you do, you will find the other end has a collar on it, which when you knock them back in, shrinks around the pin, holding it firmly in place
