Bit more poking and grinding revealed this



And this is part way through cutting out the hole at the front - it now goes into the fron wheel arch.


It’s not bad actually.

I can see inside the sill and all is solid and still well-coated. I think it’s a combination of me leaving stuff last time and/or not protecting it with something on top of the epoxy. Once stone chips broke the surface the rust crept in under it.

The bit at the front is bigger but that’s an older repair that needed to come out.

So that’s my weekend sorted then!

I have been meaning to do exactly the same, having seen them on an American resto show in plastic. When Ipoled into it they are about £100 per corner, and I figure timber hasn’t quite got that expensive yet……

I bought sawn timber 100mmx50mm approximately (or 2x4 in old money) and it cost me around £200. one side is 300mm, the other is 500mm. Took a lot of screws and was a bit of a ball-ache to make but they are really solid and will be handy when I need them

OK so last week-end I got most of the holes welded up. Started with 4 holes, welded up 4 holes and still have the most complicated hole to go (picked up a bonus hole along the way)


The last hole is at the rear of the front wheel arch



OK so here I’m looking from underneath and holding up the repair piece that I’ve made. I’ve got to do another piece to go above it (where my hand is sticking in) but that’s a much gentler curve and shouldn’t be as bad as this piece was - it was a bit of a challenge

I’ve got a question now though. You’ll see on the top side of the picture at the edge of the patch what looks like a roundish black hole. That is because it is a hole.

Now my question is - is this a drain hole or just a hole that I can patch up?

Here’s another pic that I’ve just taken without the patch held in place and taken from right underneath it.



I can get to it fairly well and could do a small patch to cover it - or do I need to leave it open (after treating it and tidying it up, obvs)

Any ideas?

Hi There,
Just had a look at my 87 3.2 and there's defiantly a 'can just get your little finger in' sized hole there.

Sorry could get a picture as space is a bit tight in the garage at the moment. I think my car is relatively untouched in that area.

Pretty confident its a drain hole between the Wing Joining plate and the door hinge pillar, this area will just fill with water if you don't have a drain hole.

Thanks Jon - no not too late - it’s my job for today. I’d been working on the basis that it was meant to be there but wasn’t sure. I can get to the back of it so should be able to smarten it up and protect it nicely

I’m going to spray dinitrol penetrating wax down the sill and had planned to do it as I worked my way along, welding the next section etc. Then I read on the side of the tube that it is highly flammable. After thinking about it for a bit I considered that putting out a major fire might be a bit of a dampener on the week-end’s ‘fun’ . So plan is to drill a couple of holes and spray the wax through them once all the welding has been done. I can plug the holes after. I was planning on one hole behind the arch liner in the front wheel arch and another one or two from inside the car

Yeah don't spray cavity until you are 100% done welding, never done that before myself, honest!

I have used Dinitrol too, just inserted into the drain holes and give it a good squirt, it floods back down and coats the surfaces.
Move the fine nozzle so to throw the 'mist' into a fan inside.
