alternator check/brushes length

Post by scalino65 »

Hi. As part of trying to figure out my car's lack of charging I have removed the alternator in order to check the brushes, Its a 73 marshall alternator with external regulator and removable brushes. The brushes look to me as if they are making contact with the slip rings but I just wanted to check if anyone knows whether there is a minimum length for the brushes? Mine are 7mm and 8mm but I think I read somewhere the minimum is supposedly 14mm. Can anyone confirm?

Also, could anyone tell me how I would rig up a bench test with an electric drill, etc to test the unit?

Many thanks
