Emerging from hibernation
Emerging from hibernation
First steps taken to bring the 356 out of winter hibernation: refurbished driver’s seat (thanks to Garry at Classic FX trimmers) fitted, and the engine fired up after 6 months sat idle (and without flattening the 6v battery- yay!). Looking forward to getting back out on the road for the upcoming events over the spring & summer. Hope to see some of you out and about.

Looks great Peter, given you're so close I must see it in the flesh!
Looks like Gary has done a fine job too.

Re: Emerging from hibernation
Hi Hugo,
Thanks for that.
That’s certainly the plan. Unfortunately I’ve still got a bit of work to do before we get back out on track…

Well if you ever need an audience for a Formula Vee racer's thread I'm sure we can help out in that department

Re: Emerging from hibernation
I would love to see anything thing to do with the formula vee race car, or am I being stupid and jumping to conclusions.
I've probably got the wrong end of the stick as usual.....

Is that an adaptor in the oil pump cover for an external cooler?
I think I'm right in saying no air fans in Formula Vee so you try to channel air over the heads and use an external oil cooler?

No, not jumping to conclusions at all Karl, and happy to share more if anyone is interested. I do as much of the work on it as I can, including engine builds. The chassis is also a bit of a one-off, as I modified the front & rear suspension of an existing car to incorporate some of my own ideas. It certainly keeps me busy, but also puts a smile on my face.
Here’s a couple of pics to start…

This was the engine on removal from the chassis at the beginning of the year (it had sat, unused, in the car all last year as I didn’t race and hence the surface corrosion). Unfortunately I’m still waiting for final parts to be finished machining before I can complete the rebuild, re-install and get it back out on track. Shouldn’t be too long now
Re: Emerging from hibernation
You are correct Neil. The crankcase is effectively bare (no fan shroud or oil cooler etc) and it runs a total loss electrical system (no alternator/generator). The most critical thing on a Formula Vee installation is cooling; sufficient air for the cylinder heads (lots of clever ducting), twin, externally mounted oil coolers on my car (maximising surface area but minimising drag), and I also pay close attention to trying to keep the central carb cool as it sits inside the engine cover. We also run separate, remote oil filter.neilbardsley wrote: ↑Thu Mar 30, 2023 4:24 pm Is that an adaptor in the oil pump cover for an external cooler?

Remains me of some of the details on Ron's car. Particularly where he guides fresh air into the cars.VeeRacer wrote:You are correct Neil.
