924 5 cylinder 07k
I have a confession to make I am going water cooled. Over recent months I have been drifting off into the 07k swaps instead of DDK early 911 stuff.
I have always held a soft spot for the G Nose 240Z, but not the L Series engine and the later iteration of the Nissan RB 2.5 turbo, well they don't like high rpm unless you spend big money.
With the 924 and 944 the 4 cylinder to me has never been a nice sound, it sounds like a Hilux and one of the aspects of the 911 that ticks a box is its smoothness.
There have been 5 cylinder transplants done to 944s using the AAN 5 cyl Audi RS2 as it bolts to the bell housing. But these are getting rare even in Audi circles and they stopped making this engine in '95. This is a nice example in Sweden that has 500hp and a good overall build quality.

So the 07k is a non turbo 5 cylinder 2.5 litre and it was used in the mk5 era VW Golf/Jetta with a steel block and alloy head, it gets a variable valve timing of 20° for the inlet and was not sold in Europe, but they made hundreds of thousands and they are $500-1000 at a US junkyards. The TTRS and RS3 uses an alloy block and head. In simple terms it is the head of the 5.0 Gallardo so the flow characteristics are way better than the Audi AAN 20v. The TTRS/RS3 has both inlet and exhaust variable valve timing. But its a £8000-13000. Size and weight of a 07k compared to a 3.0 944/968 engine is similar.
Which brings me to the 924. The main issue with starting an early 911 project, the days of a sub $10,000 US import are gone, even the 912 prices have set sail. To me It is like stepping back in time with 924 prices.
So what are the main weak points of the 924? Brakes are 4 stud VW and 'of the era'. But 964 brakes, 987 Boxster and 996 Turbo all fit. As with the front struts 996 struts, carriers are compatabe. The rear calipers require a spacer to fit the 944 trailing arm, but then you can also use BMW 330 calipers too. Boxster hubs are part of the parts bin special. I would also like to have the option of ABS as the Boxster hub and upright has the sensors and the Bosch ABS master cylinder with the pump is the logical step.
The gearbox of the 924 was a VWish gearbox, the 1989 924 Turbo gearbox 'snail' was a dog leg 5 speed and was a one year only plus these are relatively expensive. The £1000 Audi fwd 01E 6 speed was used in the passat, A6 and strong up to 400hp, you do need to change the fuel tank in the 924. There are Z06 gearbox conversions, but this requires cutting up the floor.
The engine, there are a few 944s with a naturally aspirated 07K 5 cylinder, a Gallardo exhaust header making 180hp and sounding quite nice. But as with most things turbo charging is the gigiddy gigiddy part, TTRS's or RS3s with 900 to 1400hp is not what I am after. I know the potential is there. But its only 2wd and I only want 300hp. This way I can keep stock VW/Audi parts without going deep into bespoke tuning parts.
Visually on the outside and the inside I want to keep it stock including the rear seats, instead of a blocky 80s 924 GTS race car look.
Over fenders instead of the 944 front box flares and not the 924GTS or 944 rear flares.17x9 Fuch wheels, a Golf Mk1 front spoiler to match the 944 rear spoiler. Standard nose instead of the 4 vented 924turbo and keep the outside looking similar an early RX7 or Datsun G-Nose 240Z instead of a 944 Turbo.
The aim is to keep the most expensive parts of the car the wheels and brakes.

Re: 924 5 cylinder 07k
I don’t think we got that motor here, in NA form at least, there are turbo inline 5 pots in fast Audis.
Lots of effort to go to for a few more HP and a wobblier noise than a 924S without a turbo, but with a turbo and ~1000kg should be ace and characterful.
