Because you can roll the car knowing that you will only have a large repair bill?

I am guessing the Boxster because the window drops on lifting the door handle.
They are not terrible to do Graham - it is a common problem, careful strip down is the main thing. There are lots of cheap ones available but given it is a known issue I cannot imagine that a non pattern part is better than OE, so I would get an original part.

Usually the wire breaks, or a plastic guide fails in the window regulator Graham, so you have to replace it. I presume your window went twang and dropped to the bottom, so complete replacement needed

No, just a sharp crack like a plastic tooth snapping off a gear.
The window is 5mm down from the very top.
Switching down creates a ticking sound, about 1/2 second apart.
Switching Up stop this, no glass movement at all.

Did consider painting my car. Darren makes such a fuss about such matters. No idea why - can't be that hard...

Very, very nice.
At the (very) other end of the spectrum, I put this sticker from a recent trip to LA on the rear window
