Exactly as we are finding.. but obviously the last minute of the video is the bit that really matters as we’ve done 4000 miles in 2 months on home charging plus relatively no company car tax either ( The only reason we are now running an electric car as opposed to a large petrol or diesel co car)

Good to see a carefully delivered level playing field type of report with real fact and no fiction/marketing/BS.

It would be good to see the same trip taken as inexpensively as is 'normal'.
Suburb petrol costs (diesel too?) and home charge at the start and finish of the trip.

It would be good to get a green take on these tests too if that is at all possible which I think it is not.

Aye brilliant. Everything that’s correct about living in Scotland. Free electric for cars and extortionate rates from Scottish Power(Spanish Owned) for the masses. Shame on you Mike……..and your loaded

Just had a few days in Amsterdam and had several occasions to take a taxi: three of which were Hyundai EVs. Took the opportunity to quiz the drivers who anecdotally stated that running costs were currently greater than their previous IC taxis. Petrol and diesel prices roughly the same as the UK as far as I could ascertain.

That's not really a fair comparison, as taxi drivers are moaning bastards the world over, and the price of fuel and electricity has shot up this past year. So if they were still running ICE vehicles they'd be more expensive to run than they were previously, too. Now if they had a mixed fleet and could directly compare, well, that's a different story.

Of course ULEV zone fees play a part in the overall cost too for that type of vehicle.

I thought that video was quite interesting. It is of course not all about cost, accepting that it is for many, if not most. At the very least it reinforces the lesson that unless you are absolutely desperate, choose your fuel or charging in the most cost efficient way you can, and that will never be next to a motorway!

Great video, thanks for sharing it.

I think that a modern diesel car will mop up most of the savings gained by home charging costs.

Like in the video, I too have noticed that the motorway charging points are often all busy, with people waiting in line or circling to charge up. The public charging infrastructure seems to be lagging behind demand now, as well as being an expensive way to charge/top up during a long e-journey.

Just a wee point about the battery lifetime discussion from someone who works on the periphery of EV battery chemistry research (I work on the motor drive research) - there are hundreds of lithium batteries chemistry (recipes) under research and R&D, with some great advances in cell lifetimes (longivity) that are finding their way into the latest models, but still much to learn. One of the main directions of this research today is to find the optimum chemistries that provide long lifetime under fast charging, because fast charging is needed as a market driver to charge up in a more reasonable amount of time (few tens of minutes rather than hours) and therefore reduce the number of charging points needed. Although heating caused by fast charging was generally considered to rapidly accelerate degradation of the battery (internal materials), and this was true of many early battery systems, liquid cooling of the cells to maintain a reasonably tight temperature range became a well-known and simple fix for this. In addition to chemistry improvements, the latest research that I am aware of is now looking at the possibility of tightening the temperature range by immersing the battery cells in the coolant itself... :cyclopsani:

These were all very new Hyundai EVs so the drivers had experience of the high costs of fuel for their previous IC taxis: so a fair comparison.
I think to portray all taxi drivers as " moaning bastards" is a generalisation, totally inaccurate and unfair. Generally taxi drivers in Amsterdam are a phlegmatic bunch and don't complain. Some of my best friends are taxi drivers and rarely "moan" about anything.

Fascinating discussion on electric cars here from someone who does know what they’re talking about
