I'd still want to eyeball it in operation to make sure it engages ok. Note sure if there is any visibility though. The on the pintos and xflows you can eyeball it. We've videoed it on a phone and played back the video in slow mo to check it before now

No chance to see the engagement with a 915 box, the pinion is totally shrouded.
Nothing stopping you from fitting the current starter to the engine/box out of the car on the floor and switch 12v to the starter and hear if it is a clean action and repeatable.

I’ve now split the engine and gearbox, and will get some pics later.

Many of the flywheel teeth are damaged on their end face - the screeching sound was the starter pinion spinning against the tooth end faces rather than fully extending to engage and turn the flywheel - effectively machining the end faces of the teeth for a second or so, before eventually popping into mesh. Not great!

I can’t put a link on here (I’m on Tapatalk and can’t see how) but search for my previous thread “feckin starter motor” or just search lightweight starter and it comes up.

By all means read the whole thread but skip to the end for the important bit

I’ve had a lot of problems with a power lite one and just replaced it with a wosp one and I put side by side pics on the thread.

The wosp one fits better and starts the car loads better. The failed power lite one wasn’t that old either

Had a very similar issue on my 2.0 car with 901 gearbox. The teeth (integral to flywheel) and been completely chewed away. Concluded that maybe the starter hadn't been disengaging properly, but never entirely sure. Swopped the flywheel and starter, put it back together and forgot about it.

Now I'm tempted to pull the starter and eyeball the ring gear. It hasn't done many miles since the fix but would like to be sure the problem doesn't remain.

From memory, I don't recall anything to ensure precise location of the starter i.e. location dowels or bushes. Is this correct?

On my car the starter position has no inherent adjustment- its just located by the two mounting studs and the machined spiggot on the mating face of the starter fitting into the bell housing.

I’ve now gone ahead and bought a Wosp starter - quality looks good on the face of it, and the pinion teeth leading edges look nicely bevelled.

But, i now need to buy a ring gear - turns out that I don’t have a spare after all. Anyone got one they’re not using? Looks like these are on back order and not currently in stock.
