help selling. 1973 2.4S targa RHD.

Post by robin993 »

Hi all. it has been a long time since last visiting. A good friend is thinking of selling his car and I wanted to post it on here and look for suggestions of the best way forward with it. He is looking for a simple sale and has asked me to help. He has owned the car since it was 7 years old and he is the 3rd owner, he purchased the car from the owner of our local independent Porsche specalist, Autostrasse in Essex UK. The car has been restored, i think in around 2000 or so and it is in really nice order. There are a few minor cosmetic things that could be improved, the carpets for example, but overall the car is very nice, and as far as I could see rust free. it is a good spec UK car RHD and a genuine S model.. I am also struggling to put a value on the car as it is quite unusual in RHD.
Given the above, how would you suggest selling it? I have had a number of 993 and 964 Porsches over the years and tended to sell them on Piston heads, car and classic etc. I am happy to help him and take calls etc to weed out the time wasters. i am wondering if he will get a better price selling at auction or getting a reputable dealer to sell it on commission. However if I were buying the car I would much rather deal with the long term owner.. what do you all think? I have tried to talk him out of selling, he is selling the 1973 and a 991 to fund the purchase of a modern Ferrari, which i think will be a mistake, but it is up to him and he really fancies one.
thanks for reading and thanks for your help.

This is a rare car, one of only 46 worldwide. It requires some very careful promotion by the right people to get the top price.
Can you confirm the colour please. Likely Bahia red over black. If original colour it is very rare. If repainted in the year 2000 to guards red (by mistake or otherwise) then my personal opinion is it will hurt the value.

I have been collecting the rhd 2.4S database details for some years and I’m thinking this is one that I don’t have. Would it be possible to share the engine and chassis numbers here or by pm so I can update the survivor list. There are quite a few ‘down under’ so it’s not a model often seen in the UK.

Regards
Mike

Between £50k and £200k depending on condition / matching numbers / original colour etc etc.

If I were him I’d run it up first to Maxted Page then to Paul Stephens, both near Halstead, for opinions / offers.

First year of RHD Targas? and an “S” too.

Seller should be doing some careful research on the chassis number & all the other details, to put together a compelling story for the collector market. A story sells.

My understanding is this spec is THE rarest pre-impact model made as a production vehicle, so will command a very special value to a collector.

A good meeting with the top specialist sellers must be the way forward, people who really can describe and verify the car's accuracy.

Update.
for now my friend has decided to keep the Targa. I think that it is the right decision. As soon as he started to get some serious interest he started to think that he was doing the wrong thing.. he is now considering buying a modern Targa to go with the old one!!
thanks for all of the help.
