OT: Floor standing press refurb

Post by gridgway »

I have a Sealey10T floor standing press and ram doesn't return. Over the years it has gone from ok, to pushing back required, to hard pushing back and now it needs a jack to get it back so is pretty much unusable.

I assume it's something like a swollen seal. Does anyone have any experience on whether they are self maintainable, or who could refurb it please?

Thanks
Graham

I’m sure that you will find someone closer if you look, but I have recently had an old favourite trolley jack refurbed by Pomphreys in Bristol. They did a good job at a reasonable price, and in time.

Thanks, that's good to know, it would be easy to ship it to them. I'll ask.

I'm assuming it's a fairly standard Chinese hydraulic ram? Nothing to be lost by pulling it apart. I got my old Costco trolley jack working again after I stripped it down and replaced a few O-rings. Didn't have any jack oil so used VAG group PAS fluid as it's basically the same thing. You need to be careful getting the oil level right - too much will blow seals, or at least weep past them - but other than that it's easy. Use latex gloves, work clean, lay everything out on white card, and you'll be fine.

I have used this person before, very old school and excellent service, just send the RAM to him to overhaul, think mine cost £30 all in to repair.

Just a quick update here. I contacted James at Black Jacks and had fantastic service. I sent him the ram, he took it apart to see what was wrong and although the seals were available, the return spring (the cause of the actual problem I had) was NLA from Sealey. So he organised for a new ram to be sent to me from Sealey, sent me back the old bits from the broken ram that I needed - all before xmas. He's just sent me the bill for the new ram, not costs for taking apart or sending me the old bits back.

Great service and highly recommended! And I am not successfully pressing again!
