Factory steel roll bar

Post by matteo68 »

Another unicorn part (although not as rare as the aluminium one)…

Part no. 901.803.020.01 ‘Roll bar set for subsequent installation’ in ‘70-‘73 Parts Catalog:
Image

Also listed in Competition Spares List for ‘72 MY 911S as ‘Safety Bar’:

I have the threaded plates already, I (just) need the roll bar.

The image in the parts catalog shows the diagonal bar going from above the driver’s head to behind the passenger, and I have seen photos of SRs in period with the diagonal reversed as well (in fact most of them appear to have been installed this way), so perhaps it could be mounted as preferred?

There was no padding on the roll bar for the race cars, but rally cars did have some.

If you should happen to have an original one lurking somewhere and would be prepared to sell it, please let me know…ImageImageImage

This post may be irrelevant...

I guess you are bent on getting a real one?
If not, there are many in the UK who will make you a cage like that as long as you have the radius of the main hoop and the tube dia. I suspect the cost to be about £600 to £1000.
Best they have the car to ensure things fit, I had quite a job with mine way back, bought to fit a 911 but 20mm too wide where it mounts to the weld-in sill pads, but doubt Angus' team will struggle!

I am assuming you will not be formally racing this car, but it you are then the spec of the tube is set in stone by the Motorsport UK and will be different in appearance to the Porsche one.

Thanks for the helpful comments.

I’ve discovered Carpoint make an authentic one for a reasonable price, but am waiting for details of tubing diameter, type etc at the moment:

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/165037905909 ... media=COPY

I won’t be racing it (maybe Tour Auto though) so authenticity is more important to me than complying with current motorsport regs.

I’m trying - as you may have gathered - to build this car with as many factory parts as possible, at least for the visible ones, in an effort to narrow the gap between cost and value, but I may have to compromise if they can’t be tracked down.

Mark Waring (Rennsport Classics on here) was meant to be producing replica ones but that post dried up in late 2020, when they were meant to be going into production.

There was then this one, but a full cage??

Thanks. I saw the advert for the full cage but that wouldn’t be per the parts catalog listing and incorrect for ST / SR / RSR. I didn’t know about Mark Waring’s previous attempt to produce an authentic looking one however.

Angus has said he can probably get Custom Cages to make one if they are provided with all the dimensions, bend radii and tube diameter etc but I would need to source this first somehow - I am searching through ‘Another Hot Rod’ on ESR at the moment.

For some reason, I thought Darren had a cage to period spec?

Barrie Martin used to make the best/most authentic early rear roll cage ... but I don't think he's interested in making them any more.

I'm fairly certain that Darren got his last one from Marek Lappok - who almost certainly supply the ones that Carpoint sell ...

I’m sure Darren will chip in when he reads this but I am assuming this is the same Marek who drives everyone insane by not replying to posts and PMs on ESR or indeed his own Instagram page ‘early 911 parts’ - I tried and tried to get a spare tyre strap from him but like too many others have discovered, he didn’t deliver (a bit like someone else on our own shores…)

To be honest I only buy quality repro parts from large, well-established outfits like Carpoint, Mittelmotor and EB Motorsport to have the peace of mind of a proper warranty and returns policy, even if someone like Marek is supplying them - I’d rather leave the hassle of dealing with him to them.

I tried to get a rear roll bar fabricatedbynu.ber of the usual suspects around 2 yrs ago, non of them were able to help.

I ended up going with the carpoint option, refer to the "silver hotrod" build thread should be a few pictures of the roll bar installed.

Cheers

Thanks, that’s really helpful to hear from someone with first-hand experience of the Carpoint roll bar. I’ll search for your thread but how was it in terms of quality and ease of installation?

Dave Is Barrie still trading / producing these as his website doesn’t seem to be working? If he is, can you send me his contact details please?
