Comfort package 470

By 1971 and through to 1973 the factory terminology for the ‘appearance group’ of extras or upgrades was replaced by ‘comfort group’. This is listed as option 470 and one of the upgrades listed for a T or an E model is ‘S gauges’ amongst others (leather steering wheel, gold badges etc).

What exactly is the understanding of those ‘S’ gauge upgrades wrt to this ? What was changed/upgraded for a T or E model?

Mike my understanding has always been that it refers to the 2 combination gauges.

In theory (although I think relatively few actually came like this) the T (& possibly E too) came as standard without an oil level gauge - instead the smaller combination gauge had a fuel gauge + a large low fuel warning light (occupying the whole section opposite).

Similarly, there was no oil pressure gauge as std on T (& possibly E) - just the oil temperature section with, as far as I remember, a low oil pressure warning light opposite.

Although I have no documentation to back it up my ‘72 T has the full set of gauges, S front spoiler, leather wheel, full sill trims and wide bumper trims. Standard seats though.

Date codes on the instruments all match and there’s no evidence of later upgrades.

My assumption is it had this option pack from new.

My RHD 73 T came with the 2 standard gauges that Andy mentioned. The CoA never mentioned comfort pack or S gauges. But I upgraded them to S gauges.

My donor T didn’t have the S gauges and as I’m going to S spec for GeLo, I’m changing out the 80mm fuel tank gauge / instrument cluster for a 60l fuel tank (part no. 911.641.201.00) which just had the fuel gauge at the top:




and the 100mm instrument cluster (part no. 911.641.102.00), with just oil temp at the top:




both of which were unique to the T.

The E & S 60l 80mm instrument cluster for ‘72-on models had the fuel gauge on the left hand side and oil level on the right hand side (part number 911.641.202.01):



The E & S 100mm instrument cluster had the oil temperature on the left hand side and oil pressure on the right hand side and was supplied with German text (911.641.103.00):



or English text (911.641.104.00):



depending on the market.

There were also different versions of this gauge for Sportos as well (911.641.105.00 (German) and 911.641.106.00 (English).

However if you ordered a 100l fuel tank as an option (can’t find the option code now), you would also get the very rare, but identical in appearance, 80mm instrument cluster for 100l tank (part number 911.641.206.00) - available for T, E or S models.

Gary, I think your car must have the options pack. There was no evidence your car ever had gold engine lid letters? The seat upgrade was never a part of the options pack so I think you have everything on the options list.

Not sure about the letters Mike, they are bit of a funny colour, but think they started off silver.

It had lots of paint long before I got to it so could well have been changed.

Mine came with option 470 (on the CoA), but it didn't have a leather steering wheel, but it does have the S gauges, larger chrome side sill covers etc.

So many years for things to get changed.
My utterly unloved from new Feb 1973T, German market, no options at all arrived in the UK with lots changed over.
It had the English oiltemp and pressure gauge when I got it in '88

And a 2.2T engine on webers with an SC exhaust, correct rear lid lettering like Gary's, but the engine grill had turned bronze.

Good to read up on these correct features even if my car is a light year away from right

Mind you, I've fitted a lot of incorrect parts in my time too.

My 71 T was ordered with S gauges as shown above, gold lettering, leather steering wheel, standard seats but with full basket weave embossed leather, leather door covering (I think it’s leather) , anti roll bars, S Ali Calipers all round and 15 inch Fuchs. it also has the dealer cocoa mat one piece embossed with Porsche lettering. It’s quite a spec for a T which made me wonder why he ordered it that way. I am led to believe that in 71 if you bought an E you got the pneumatic dampers and no anti roll bars but MFI. I guess he wanted normal suspension etc and couldn’t pony up for a S.

The other Ts I’ve owned all came with comfort spec which was 14 inch wheels, no anti roll bars and those pesky 3 inch steel calipers. The lack of anti roll bars always confused me as to why that would be ‘comfort’.

That’s a very well appointed T. Sounds a very nice 911.

I had just about nailed down all the comfort pack details as they are all fairly easy to spot from the many parts I have ready for reassembly but I was just asking for confirmation about what exactly ‘S’ instruments were. I have the ones pictured by Matt and happy that the part numbers match mine for MY73. So I’m happy that my car will match the cardex in full as it does list ‘comfort pack 470’.
