TTG Horn grilles...

Post by g3ngs2 »

Curious as to folks thoughts on through the grille horn grilles..

Not in chrome but in black.

I've never seen them available in black which is kind of annoying on account of having a 73 and wanting to have the light surrounds etc etc in black and not chrome.

The the 72 onwards that I've seen have chrome TTG and also chrome surrounds on their lights.

That said... some digging shows a few 73 RS with with the TTG lamps with black grilles and the same references to RS done this way on the Early 911S Registry with black 118s from a 914.

By chance there are also a set of the black grilles on eBay offered as new old stock claiming to be factory cut for TTG.

The question to anyone who has ponderd such things... Were black TTG horn grilles ever a sanctioned, semi sanctioned, bona fide thing or is the only correct way to be all chrome for 72 onwards?

Alleged NOS black TTGs that have been apparently factory cut. Whether it's true or not $340 feels like a hellovalot of money for them.ImageImageImage

Not sure, but I have some black ones I bought that were part of a full ttg light package I bought for my car . I’ve never fitted them though and I also didn’t pay that kind of money just for the grills

Yeah that price is a bit optimistic.

Curious about yours though as to where you got them from and how they have been cut.

The ones above look quite rough and I've seen others where the bar above has also been removed.

I do quite like the idea of the approach in a RS where either the original owner / dealer / someone had used black TTG and 914 118s to keep the car chrome free

.

I've had several sets of NOS black TTG horn grilles - they were moulded that way - ie not std black horn grilles that had been 'trimmed'.

I seem to remember that even in '73 if models were ordered with the TTG option they came with chrome horn grilles whereas the kits that Porsche supplied for subsequent fitting came with black plastic horn grilles ...

Ah so those grilles in the pictures on eBay may well be legit and part of a kit from way back when

Sorry not legit. So the kits would have been similar to the chrome in their shape, or made the same way as the ones on eBay

The ones on ebay look correct (ie they were 'simpler' than the chromed metal versions).

I'm fairly sure that in addition to the complete kits, any of the parts could have been ordered separately.

Thanks for the insight.

I want to keep the black trim of the 72/73 but each time I've seen TTG on those years they've all seemed to be chrome and then the rest of the trim has then also become chrome too (apart from one car that mixed chrome TTG and black trim on the lights, letters, etc)

If it was something that was a legitimate "thing" then I feel better about the black TTG and black trim direction in heading in
