Something special - Convertible D

Post by Williams-Crawford »

Do you dream of driving to the south of France in an early Porsche, a convertible so you can enjoy the Riviera's rays as you cruise alongside the Promenade des Anglais? Do you lust after a Speedster but are not sure about the leaky top, or the ever-increasing prices? Do you want to stand out from the crowd behind the wheel of one of the rarest and most soughtafter 356s? If so, then we have the car for you…

We're proud to offer this January 1959 delivery 356 Convertible D – the 'D' standing for Drauz. Just 1331 of this model were produced between August 1958 and September 1959, making them one of the rarest ‘production’ Porsche 356. Whilst usual coachbuilders Reutter continued with their own 356 A cabriolet bodywork, they were unable to meet the demand from Porsche to build a European friendly replacement for the Speedster. And so, well respected karosserie Drauz of Heilbronn, in south west Germany, were called upon to produce an alternative.

Offering a touch more comfort and refinement than the outgoing Speedster model, the Convertible D featured a taller windscreen (which was still removable for ‘race’ weekends), wind-up windows, improved hood structure and padded seats. Contemporary Porsche sales literature described the new Convertible D as 'a dynamic car of beautiful proportions. Extra light and low in design for competition and pleasure driving.'

Chassis number 85875 is a matching numbers example: chassis, engine and transmission. Delivered by Rittersbacher of Kaiserlautern in January 1959, it features a 60bhp 1582 cc (Type 616/1) engine running twin Zenith carburettors.

Benefiting from quality restoration (with photographic documentation) and finished in its original colour of Ruby red (5702), the body presents very well, with clean lines and crisp panel gaps, while the chrome, hood and upholstery are also commendably to a high standard. With the overhauled mechanicals, this 356 not only presents beautifully, but drives equally well too.

Our findings suggest that this 356 benefits not only from an exceptionally high quality older restoration, but it also appears to be extraordinarily original. Body panels appear all original to this car, as do the floors, sills and jacking points, with evidence of only minor repairs – there is no evidence of accident damage. A reassuring touch is that all wheels are date marked 10/58, while a correct toolkit resides in the boot. Whether regarded solely as an investment, or as a thoroughly useable classic Porsche, this Convertible D is bound to please.

Priced at £249,995. Serious offers considered on this once in a lifetime opportunity.
