Here are some more detailed pics, courtesy of my friend Shin Watanabe. The price will be $50K for all panels unassembled, or $80K assembled as shown:

So if I have rusty old 356B , that I cut the roof and put a speedster screen on … that’s fine by the dvla rules … then I backdate the nose ? I’d say you can get away with that without iva ing ….

So A RD body and a 356 doner, that’s never going to be picked up on my dvla as they won’t know the fine details to differentiate . It’s basically a backdated and restored 356 body….

Opinions will vary on this I know, but that falls foul of the first line of this from the dvla:

No it's not because the body is of unitary construction, ergo chopping off the roof is no different to chopping up the chassis = IVA.

And as Gary points out, the IVA get-out clause for new shells only relates to factory-made (or sanctioned) replacements...

I think that's amazing, and if I had a rotten 356 (some may say I already have!) I'd take my chances with the dvlc thing........W

All the notchbacks that are still left will be breathing a sigh of relief

I’m with winston though and risk it … who would know wether the speedster ‘conversion ‘ had been done 50 years ago ?

Or..
take a nasty 356 coupe (say) with a decent roof and put the original roof on this shell?
Also, I doubt if the biggest market for this shell is the frumpy UK.
So what if you cant do it without some risk in the UK, the Americans will be fine.

80k all welded up on a jig. Is that a good price?

IIRC an MGB shell was original tools, new jigs and hand welded then dipped in the UK for something like 20k? (about a decade ago)

The market for the MGB was much much larger though, the 356 is always going to be niche and hence expensive to amortise all that tooling whereas the MGB used the factory tooling if I remember correctly.

I went to the LA Lit meet , like Angus and a few others , and was fortunate enough to have a good look at the Restoration Design Speedster shell .
Well you have to be in the mindset of what an original Speedster now costs , and if you can bear that then I think you might be seriously interested .
But the project is going to work out at £200,000 to £250,000 all in .
about a weeks wages for Pogba and company

.....PS it looked a really great piece of metal and man -maths tells me if I sell all 3 old Porsches I possess I could have one ;)
