Will you cover the dash in vinyl?

I'm looking for a pre-impact bumper 911S or other high-revving 911 to restore - please let me know if you see one.

Yes, I did it before probably 20 years back, but I was never happy with the area around the speaker grille so I’m going to try harder this time!!

Got one side of the of the car very nearly done today, certainly that 1/4 window is never coming out again after spending an hour trying to get those little M5 screws in!

Image

I can’t find the over-centre latches at the moment so what you can’t see in this pic is me breaking my thumb pushing the window in! :)

I’ve taped the chrome on as I’m not putting self tappers through my 1/4 panel!

The trim is not as black black as I’d like, but I’ve bought vinyl from two suppliers now and whilst different from each other neither is fully black.

The seat belt cover is just balancing in this pic as I need to drill a hole for the self tapper and I don’t want to do that until I know where everything is going to sit with carpet etc.

Plan for tomorrow is to do the parcel shelf sound deadening then remake the shelf. Both flat sections are distorted so they will be replaced.

I notice you've put inertia reels in. This is something of a dilemma for me. Certainly convenient, but i remember with fondness as a kid in my parents cars and in my early p1800, the adjustable length clip-in belts.

The car has always had the inertia reels, I wouldn’t be without them! I think they were an option, maybe dealer fit, as the 1/4 panel was definitely cut after it was trimmed.

Possibly with an axe :)

The door tops were the hardest to trim, to get the ends free from creasing took some aggressive stretching and a couple of attempts.

Image

This is the seatbelt reel cover. The top was distorted so a few minutes with the heat gun and clamping it got it flat again:

Image
A nice shape to trim, seems hard at first until you work out to stretch it diagonally and it flows over the contours. The forward edge is concave so the trim floats until it’s on the car and tucked under the flange on the B pillar.

This is the replacement for the vertical section. You have to stick the lower edge in place then staple it to the arch trim under the vinyl before pulling it tight.

Latest update from the trim shop.

Parcel shelf was in a desperate shape, both boards distorted and the upper one cracked in to three pieces.

I’ve made new boards and assembled the rear one to the retrimmed centre section. Vertical board is on the list for tonight.

I first of all trimmed the rear section in vinyl, then binned it off and did it in alcantara to complement the headlining. Also no reflections in the rear screen.

Old trim: Picture doesn’t capture the smell!

Dry build to check the hole positions for the strap clamps.
Image

Stapling it to the centre section under the trim. The stapler only just gets the staples through so they needed a second hit with a hammer to get them protruding enough to fold the ends over.
Image

The original staples looked like they were hammered over rather than properly formed so keeping it original ;)
Image

Then trimmed it once all the stapling was done:

Now I can see where the shelf will end up I can sort the ends of the headlining. Probably going to put some foam behind the surface on the pillar and then pull the trim down tight and glue it to the metal. The parcel shelf will then bite into that slightly and close the gap up.

Once the vertical board is done tonight (in vinyl) I’ll take a look at the door cards. :)

Really nice, very satisfying too for you and all that glue... :drunken:

I fitted inertia reel belts designed for a 'universal' fitment using the bolts of the roll cage 30 years ago, makes driving so much nicer.

This glue isn’t anywhere near smelly enough ;)

Done the vertical bit now and I can get on with the headlining tonight

Still got some new ones somewhere!

Thanks for the reminder as I need to get some press studs for the back of the self cross bar and fit them before I forget.

I’ve bought some ‘lift the dot’ Tenax fasteners for the seat straps as the press studs were never that robust. Should be here tomorrow so they can go into the shelf and finish it off.

Also did a test run tonight on the speaker grille for the door trim. Worked out quite well and a massive improvement on my earlier version I did a long time back.

That looks great, I think the different size holes really make the look.
