Carrera 3.2 Speedo not working

Post by Peter Roberts »

I thought i was at the end of the refresh of my SSE but these small things come to try us. its been laid up for several years so i should expect minor gremlins. I have sourced parts to replace my oile return tubes and this is arranged for the end of this week.
Now disvovered the speedo is not working. Would appreciate some advice on what things i should check. It was working before being laid up

Check you sensor connections at the gearbox and on the back of the gauge, probably just need a clean and wiggle due to lack of use.

Sensor location:

Might be easier checking the sensor first rather than trying remove the gauge itself.

My garage checked the reed switch which seemed to be located correctly. The drawing shows a plug a short distance from the reed switch but he could not locate this as the wire disappeared into the car with no sign of the plug

I have now discovered the plug is in the tunnel and that it can be tested by connecting a buzzer to the socket and turning the wheels to see if it buzzes.
What type of buzzer do i need? Is it an electronic one or will a door bell type buzzer work?

got into the tunnel and found 2 plugs. One marked 911 612 051 00 qnd has two brown wires. The other are two similar connectors with one wire each, one is brown the other green. Which wires are the ones connected to the speed sensor?

You are not wrong. If it was not for google i would be lost.
Thank you for the tip the information was priceless but alas still not solved the problem. Checked output from pulser. I do not have a buzzer type meter but when put a multi meter on the wires and spun the wheel it changed from "1" to some random numbers and then back to one when the wheel stopped. Pulled the speedo and did the same test on the green and brown wires going into the speedo and got the same result so it appears that there is a signal and it is getting through. Also wiggled all the wires and checked for a good earth to the clock. When i started the car and ran through a few gears no reading on the speedo.
I have a friend who is an electronics wizard comming to test next week and he advised that there is an instrument repair company close to me who can check out the speedo so here's hoping for some progress
