Brake Upgrade for 1970 T
Hi there,
Looking for some advice for the brakes one my 1970T to ST project. I currently have the standard brakes that are in need of a refurb but I'm presuming an upgrade is in order as I'm going to be using a 3.0 engine. Car will only be used on the road and I'm really just looking for a cost effective solution that works.
I was thinking about using Front 'A' Calipers the same as on my 3.2 Carrera as that stops well enough for me but have only just realised that the 'A' calipers have larger spacing for the mounts so I would need to change the struts. Although I can get a pair of callipers for Euro car parts for £271 a set of struts doesn't seem that readily available second hand, also not sure If I would need different lower arms too?
Had a bit of a google and came up with brakes from carbon 12 but looks like the company no longer exists. Also found these S Type on heritage car parts for £187 each, Branded as 'FORST' does anyone know anything about these and if there worth trying?
I haven't really thought about the rears yet.
Master cylinder looks like standard but fairly recent so wondering if I could reuse or this should be upgraded or replaced.

My ex hillclimb '73T has a 3.2 in it, so about 230 bhp.
A calipers front, '73 width drilled and vented discs
M calipers rear, drilled and vented discs
Stock master
Carbone brake pads all round
DOT 4 fluid
Works well.
You will need the 'bigger' front struts for this as you know.
Miles better at stopping than stock, but almost anything is...
Pads I think make the biggest difference, and a bit noisy in use too.

If you’re going ST .. what front shock / struts are you planning on using ?
I have bilstein struts with 3.5 on y car and run 3.2 calipers .

I have the genuine version of the 1970 S caliper (alloy) on my 1970 car. Meaning the original Ate version of the repro "Forst" caliper to which you linked. Personally I'd be very wary of those Forst units. Repro S calipers I've seen in recent years, and these look the same, have been cast (not forged like the originals). I doubt they are anywhere near as strong. If they are S repros they are 3.5" spacing, so don't solve your strut problem anyway.
If you bite the bullet and find some new struts with 3.5" spacing, the "A" caliper is a good choice (in my experience with another car). To answer your question: no need to change the lower arms, just the struts.

Good to hear all well with carbon 12, found some more info and although they look good they are more than I want to spend.

Nice to be starting the search for the struts early, none on ebay at the moment of interest but there has been some that look to have sold for sensible money recently.

The easiest option (in terms of no changes required) is the mid 80's Alfa GTV front calipers - aluminium Brembo with 48mm pistons and 3 inch spacing.
Just need to find them....and make a new short hard line. Working fantastically (with "racier" pads)...

Bilstein struts are ‘upside down’ style and imho better strut than boge. Also bilstein allows you to raise the spindles up the body if required to lower the car whilst keeping original geometry ( this is a remove and reweld the spindle job)

Yes, that's them. Aside from ease of install and great performance, they're an amazing weight saving over the steel cporsche calipers (ie non-S aluminium version).
I recommend highly, and there is lots of info on the web about this.
