Question about trailers...
Firstly... No I’m not going to tow one with my ‘12!
There’s the possibly I may need to transport one of my vehicles on a trailer soon. I can’t get my head around how the insurance will work.
The trailer appears to be covered by my car policy but it is silent about the vehicle on the trailer.
Is it usual to take out additional insurance for this? Or is it expected that the vehicle on the trailer will be covered under its own insurance policy?
Many thanks in advance.
Ollie

Re: Question about trailers...
Ask your insurer.
Or talk to Hagerty, they insure my Lola for transit while being towed by me on my trailer which is also insured.
All separate to my tow car policy.

Re: Question about trailers...
I have always towed with the trailer covered by the towing vehicle and the car on it covered by its own policy. I need to rethink now as the Boxster is just not used on the road any longer so I need to seek a policy for theft and towing risk only on the way to events.

Re: Question about trailers...
When I towed my shell I checked my company car insurance covered the trailer (which it did) but it didn’t cover the contents.
My car is currently is insured as a non running project so I contacted Hagerty and explained what I was doing and they added a note to the policy to cover the shell on a trailer and also away from home whilst it was being painted.
Didn’t cost me anything extra, but it was nice to know it was covered.

Re: Question about trailers...
All my classics are on one policy and I have the trailer insured as well: from memory it was 139 per annum, for a cover of 100k and fully comprehensive. I have trailer locked with a towing attachment, stored in a farm building next door (CCTV and alarmed) but, this being the countryside, it pays to be vigilant.
An added complication in this post-brexit world is that insurance is required when towing outside of the UK, and the trailer needs an M-registration number plate and trailer registration documents.
hope this helps!
