1979 SC Targa Project

Post by TheEasyLife »

1979 911 SC Targa project. The car was manufactured on 15 02 79 and first registered on 16 03 79. The car was UK supplied, is numbers matching and was HPI clear when I checked and purchased it. I also have its COA from Porsche Cars GB which confirms the above spec and that it was built with Light Blue Metallic paint (colour code J4V9) and has a beige (Tan) leatherette interior. It sits on cookie cutter alloy wheels. It was optioned as follows: rubber buffers on bumper horns, headlight washers, rear wiper, coloured glass and power windows. So a UK delivered 911 Targa.

I bought this project in late 2016 with the intention to restore it back to its former glory as a long term project over the next handful of years having sold and really missed my 73T. I wanted a Targa and really liked this blue/tan colour combination. It has been in storage since its purchase and I've seen it twice in that time. As per most project adverts, life has moved on, my circumstances have changed and I now cannot see myself restoring this car in the next few years. As such, I am offering it for sale so that the next person can actually do something with it and I'll most likely put the money from this sale towards a 996/7 so I can take my children out in a 911 (just not an aircooled one) whilst they are still small enough to fit in the rear seats, which was the plan for this car....

Let me set some expectations, this is a project or maybe even a parts/spares car. You won't get it up and running with some spanners and an oily rag in a weekend or two. There is historic chassis damage, a bent offside chassis leg, that needs repairing. The engine is not connected, has no oil in it and as such it hasn’t been started under my ownership and I've no idea when it was last run nor the mileage as it was all going to be rebuilt and restored in due course. The interior was taken out and not refitted and the exterior paintwork was sandblasted away prior to my ownership. This sandblasting has been done very well according to my trusted bodywork man as the bulk of the galvanising wasn't touched and the bonnet isn’t wavy.. When I purchased the car, it was highlighted in that advert that the sills were rust free and the wings were good.

It is missing the following as large items: front windscreen, headlights, rear lights, Cardboard heater cover, Headlamp water pump, 4x bumper bellows, Wiper arms, Rear bumper mounts, Rear Fog lights, Heat guard above silencer, Seat belts, Floorboards, Heater console and battery. This list is not exclusive and you should assume other items will be missing. I planned on replacing some of these and more with modern upgrades such as LED headlights, lightweight EB Racing rear lights, Porsche Classic Sat Nav radio, Classic Retrofit Fuse panels, maybe their electric Aircon if I'd any budget left...

The car will come with some good used spares I've collected to replace mosly missing items to get it back on the road such as a rear quarter panel, centre console, heater console, drivers door window frame, tool kit and an SC Tyre Compressor. I will also supply a good used front valance and have a used slam panel patch piece that needs collecting from a southern DDKer. I will also supply some new parts such as engine lid grille and periscope headlight washers.

To sweeten the deal, I have some upgrades for this car which will be included at the asking price: Good used SSI's and an SS SSI exhaust and a pair of used Early SC Sports Seats in matching Beige (Tan) leatherette with tartan base and backs in need of a retrim on the tartan as it is worn through in places. The leatherette has one or two marks on them but you’d probably be retrimming them fully at that stage of the rebuild. These upgrades are not included if the car is sold for lower than the asking price and are probably worth £2.5K+ by themselves.

Once Lockdown is over, come to Leicester with your bodywork specialist to see if this is the right project for you.

Price: £20K
