Soundproof retrofit workshop
Would like some advice on soundproofing a workshop space. Some relatively heavy machinery for wood and metal - I understand one should try to isolate the noisiest kit but when you need to jump from machine to machine it doesn’t really help workflow.
So, looking for pointers on product, specialists who can advise. Has anyone been through process? Building is pretty new, cavity wall with 100mm insulation, brick /block, trussed roof insulated with fibreglass.

Re: Soundproof retrofit workshop
I’m no acoustic engineer. But here’s what I reckon anyway:
To stop sound transmitting you need to suppress and isolate the vibrations.
The ideal is a floating box within your existing box. The floating walls and floor catch the vibrations and don’t pass them on to the external walls. Varying materials (plasterboard - air - block - insulation - brick) also help as they’ll suppress different frequencies. As soon as you fix solidly to your existing surfaces the sound will transmit along the fixings and you’ll struggle.
Realistically you’ll probably not want to build a levitating box so you should look to get the machines soft-mounted so they transmit less through the floor, then use resilient bars and acoustic plasterboard on the floors and ceiling.
Or something.

Re: Soundproof retrofit workshop
Are you trying to stop noise escaping from the workshop or for it to be less noisy within?

You need to get some Mass Loaded Vinyl, its used in the building trade to reduce noise from one room to another - google it to find out all you'll need to know.
