Does anyone know of a good company to do the rebuild on a very tight budget?

Thanksxxxx

Beware!

The labour involved in simply stripping chacking cleaning and reassembly setting cams and tappetts is about 30 hours.

Doing the heads with new giudes, recutting seats setting valve stem heights and checking springs is another 10 hours at least.

Honing, rings and bits. 5 hours..
Total 45 hours of skilled work..say, 20 an hour .900 ..

Gaskets rings guides valves ..

It will not be cheap.

So what you need to decide is
A. Is it cheaper to sell this engine and get another?..probably..
B. Should I put another 5-10 hours labour in to get the bottom end done at the same time..oiling modifications etc..?
C. what else will have to be done at the same time?

Head studs, exhaust clutch etc etc..

I suspect you will conclude that if your plan is to keep it for say five years, you will want the full Monty...which is about 5K.

And if you do not, another engine is the way to go..

Just my take..

What exactly are the symptoms?

Kind regards
David

if the engine is matching numbers, then IMHO I would always rebuild as a matching numbers 2.4S will always be more desirable than a non matching

Thanks David,

That's really usefull!

Do you know of any good garages who don't charge the usual £45 + per hour?

Cheers

No unfortunately it's not a matching numbers, but is of the same year, ie 911330 and 6330 both 73!

Thinking of building it as a 2.8 maybe?

Hello, Bear.

Yes, I am sure it need not cost that!

But when you posted I was worried that you might end in the hands of one of the botchers..

Again, if you really want a 2.8 RS engine, it will be cheaper to buy one, or even build from scratch..!

What exactly is the symptom?

Call me if you want

Bear: please remember you have a very desirable engine there: however bad it might sound.

As James says, a matching nos. 2.4S is very sought after, and the next best would be a near match. If it was me (and I'm sure you're already on these lines) I would fight tooth and nail to keep that 'S' engine with that car: even though it's not an exact match.

Thanks guys,

I think it is really important to keep the engine with the car!

It has cylinder head leakage and definately needs a top end build at very least, my concern is finding a good and cheap garage, if the two actually exist in the one!

A 2.4s with a genuine 2.4s engine MUST be kept together at all cost.

If you want a 2.8 buy another 911.

Sorry to come on so strong, but have you seen 2.4S prices recently.

'Cheap is cheap in every way'.................Henry Royce

Save up and do it well and then it only needs done once. In the long run this may well turn out to be the 'cheapest'

I have all intenetions to keep the engine with car.

However expensive does not necessarily mean good!

I was just wondering if anybody knows of a good garage that is not stupidly expensive and I am putting good before expense?

For example I believe there are some really good garages in Germany better than most in England and their euro hour rates are much cheaper than UK rates.

Thanks for all your comments!

But all I want to know is can anybody reccomend a good garage?

OK, this is not the best news..

Its not usual for the 2.4L engine to develop head leaks.

If this diagnosisi is correct, I'd wonder whether it is actually a 2.7L motor..or the old 2.4 with 2.7 or bigger barrels..

The cause of the problem is either pulled studs in the case (budget for 500 BGP to line bore reface rebore spigots and repair the case)..or broken studs..
Unfortunately if there has been escape of hot gases between barrel and head, the head will need work to reface the mating surface too..I have also seen heads with chunks flame cut out of them..

But it may be wrong..has it had a leakdown test to see positively where the air is escaping?
If you are very lucky you may just have an exhaust leak,,

Good Luck!

Kind regards
David
