I over-filled once, the white smoke is huge.
The smoking from the NS of the engine is oil burning off from previous leaks. The leaked oil will run well into the heat exchanger tin work. Can you smell hot oil via the heating system in the car when hot, fan on low?
These are simple tests and you might do worse than find a classic car specialist near you and take the car there, up on ramps and a good look around underneath with a good mechanic.

If it is oil in the heat exchanger you can carefully drill a small hole in the bottom to let it out.
I did this when I first got my car as there was oil in the heat exchangers.
Later I fixed the leaks too.

Mmm oil in the heat exchanger. Where would the smoke come out if oil inside right heat exchanger?. Can I just take the exchanger off and clean it out ?

Burning oil will smoke out of any opening.
The exchanger metal 'box' is not hermetically air tight, so some will sneak out under the engine.
If the heater is on max heat setting and the fan on there will be smoke or smell pumped into the cars interior.
You will smell it!
This is why I suggested you try the heater assuming it works!

A polluted exchanger can be washed out. Petrol works well or cellulose thinners.
Ensure it is dry aster installation.
Removing a heat exchanger can be a challenge...

Taking my car to the nearest specialist is a no go lol. The more I’m thinking about the oil in the heat exchanger the more it makes sense . Il take the ss off and give them a good clean . Would u recommend that I put the old set of heat exchangers back on as they’re already clean ? . Thanks this has given me new hope in getting her smoke free so me and the wee man can get out for a blast when I’m home. Cheers

Last time I was out in her the smoke was coming in footwell passengers side with fan on . Ah ha by Jove I think we’re onto something lol. I’m sure removing the heat exchanger will be no easy task but at least I now have a task and perhaps the beginning of a plan to bring this to an end. Thanks

If it has only had a problem since you had the bottom cam cover off I would suspect that it is leaking into the heat exchangers.

Basically if this is a new problem then go back through everything that has been touched since as something there must have changed.

Whenever I have had an oil leak I have been able to see the result on the exhaust or heat exchangers even if I cannot immediately see the source of the leak. I would clean it all off and check for leaks first. Although what you see may be oil in the heat exchanger the problem is how it got there.

Unless you are very able I would not try to take the heat exchanger off as the studs often break off.

If you fix the leak then I think just getting it hot will burn the oil off but you can see where the exhaust pipes are in the heat exchanger so if you drill a small hole in the bottom avoiding the pipes it will let the oil out but I think you need to fix the leak first.

The oil leak from the bottom covers was fixed with new gaskets so no current oil leak. I’m not keen on drilling into my ss exchangers so il just whip them off and give them a clean . Can’t be that difficult they were only put on a couple of years ago.

You are definitely dealing with burning oil in the heat exchanger. I had the very same problem with flames spreading to the flexihose at the flapper valve. Bloody scary.

I had to remove the heat exchangers and clean it out using degreaser, soapy water and a pressure washer. The oil is caked and may be burning for some time.

Use a heat gun from the outside once you have flushed the heat exchanger until it stop smoking. Better to do this in a controlled manner than with the engine running.

I drilled mine to allow for future drainage. These engines will leak again at some point.

Wow thanks for that . I had to use extinguisher when it first happened but luckily the flames were kept at bay. Thank you for sharing 911T black from Denmark . I’ve now got the plan . Take the heat exchangers off clean all oil from inside and use heat gun. To make sure all smoke is gone . Do I really need to drill a hole in my nice shiney heat exchangers lol. They are so shiney lol . I’m happy I have a plan many thanks.

If you have washed them all out well then I would not dill a hole but I think JB meant a small hole as in 5mm dia. Won't affect anything in the heater, just the sheet metal, not the exhaust pipe!
I didn't drill mine and all has been good since 15 years ago!
