911 Oil tank

Post by shepheam »

I'm looking for a replacement oil tank for a 1976 Carrera 3.0
Anyone know the best place to look?

Thanks.

Do you know exactly what you need ? I have a tank out of a late 70's / early 80's car which MAY either be what you need , or may do ??

Can photograph in a few days when I recover from todays general anaesthetic !!!

cheers

There's a refurbished 1981 SC oil tank advertised in the latest Porsche Post.

Majority are perforated after so many years

They are ???
Stainless material (at least my 1973 one was) , and fully oiled inside
never knew that .................. (can't understand why they would be ... stone damage ??)

Most I’ve seen are copper coated steel. Mud packs around them and eventually fail from the outside.

I bought a new one eventually after admitting defeat with 2 second hand ones

.

Pre-'73 were certainly copper-coated mild steel & the attacks were 2-pronged - mud/muck adhering to the outside & acid build-up in the oil eroding from the inside.

In addition, you can't successfully repair any subsequent pin holes by welding since the copper 'pollutes' any attempts so the only option for repair is brazing ...

As Raymond stated, even those that appear 'sound' invariably have hidden pin holes.

sorry - I thought the requirement was for 1976 +

I would be surprised if 1973 stainless was a one year only material change ... did I have a one off tank ??? (but have been surprised before !)

My. Dec 72 build ( my73) is steel,copper coated ( it’s in storage )

I’ve also currently fitted a 74 tank and that too is steel copper coated ( slight different design to the oil filter mount to a 73 tank

Hi All,
Thanks for your comments. Must admit I didn't check back in after an email of a reply so didn't realise there were so many.

Just to close out the thread. I managed to source an early SC tank, so it is stainless and accepts my older style cap. Happy chappie :-)
