My '72 911T

Post by Gary71 »

Well that’s one less original panel staying one the car then... it’s was worth a go but the lid hasn’t worked out to my satisfaction.

With the floor fully finished and much cleaning done it was time to get it off the rollover frame so all the panels could go on.

Image

It’s now sat on the trolley up on axle stands to get a good working height.

All the outer panels except the rear bumper are now on. Nothing really fits that well, wings, bonnet, scuttle are ok but the doors to quarters need plenty of work. Not much point trying too hard until the shell is straight.

Image

I dug the rear 1/4 bumpers out of the shed and found this lurking under 3mm of filler. It would be such a shame to find one bit in good condition and requiring nothing more than cleaning wouldn’t it?

Image

Time for a short Xmas break now so I’ll be back out to work that bumper once festivities are over. Image

I had to do some local patches on my rear bumpers last year, original to the car.
The curves I found quite complex when I thought they would be simple patches...

I found deep rot in my rear deck too, in one corner and the rust was about 8" up and across from the left corner.
It was a bitch to patch, wise to leave it to Barry, very thin steel, compound curves everywhere.
Dosed the whole lower section in every rust preventative I could find and up the sides too.

Shell will soon be gone south. :)

Yes they look simple, but probably anything but. Let’s see how close I can get in steel!

So to the first half of the first bumper...

It’s very 3D so had to slice the top to get the curvature in the absence of a big shrinker.

Happy with the end result though. :)

Had my Xmas bonus today in that the other bumper is just fine!

Currently this aluminium rear panel I bought from Mick Cliff 10+ years ago (and took out of the packaging today!) is sitting in paint stripper shifting all that lovely sepia :)

I’ve now stripped it to the bare ali and it had nearly 5mm of filler at the bottom edge and 1mm over the whole surface. My garage now looks like Pompeii...

Not quite sure why it had so much filler in it, ok it was dented, but 20 minutes of even my inept panel beating skills has got it back to a almost perfect panel.

I’d forgotten how easy working aluminium is!
