Car jacked up pretty easily - used two trolley jacks and a scaffolding plank - jacked up just in front of the jacking points. Motor now out after a fiddle with the gearbox shaft and having to use a bottle jack to lift the nose of the gearbox and jiggle it out.
Some questions
1. Now the gearbox is out of the way I can see the speedo cable coming out of the tube to the right of the one for the gear shaft. It cant have been connected as I didn't disconnect it and nothing apparent on the g/b that it goes into. Therefore do I have an electric speedo rather than mechanical by cable? Did they do this on dog leg boxes? If they did do I need to locate a compatible speedo?
2. Splitting the g/b from the engine...…..read the Haynes manual in abject horror - make up spacers it says. Like I have a lathe in my shed! Anyway I need suggestions - can I buy special tools? Anybody got any spacers I can borrow - will a lump hammer help?
Just looked at Sec 5 Chapter 1.
The 2.2 trans is awkward compared to the later 73 on trans, but to compress the bearing in the way they state (have you tried the other way they mention?) then stack up a load of washers from B&Q instead of the special spacers?
I guess the dia of the washers is 8mm but get some 6mm ones just in case.
At a guess, you will need 60 washers. (20 for each )
I doubt the 901 box came with electric speedo, previous mechanic simply did not remember to fit the cable end, or the threads are damaged.

901 and 911 dog leg gearboxes did not come with electrically driven speedo. If you do not have a drive then it may be that you have a later 915 gearbox. The early 915 gearbox came with mechanical speedo the later ones were electric. Do you have a H pattern or dog leg, ie first gear left and down?
I have a 911 gearbox in my 1970 2.2E and I do not need any spacers to remove the gearbox from the engine, just turn the clutch release bearing through 90 degrees then unbolt and slide off. One person can lift the gearbox.
Kind Regards

Thanks 911Hillclimber and JohnM for the input - John deffo a dogleg as you will see...….here we go...….
Unbolted the box and pulled and off it came. Simple as that.
the numbers on the base of the box show that it is in fact a 902/1 gearbox serial number 130963
Its a 65-67 911 6 Cylinder box. Not quite what I was expecting.
Need to have another chat with Mike Bainbridge as to whether (if rebuilt) it will handle the torque of the 2.7 or whether cost effective to sell it (any idea on value?) and get a 915 box
The end position looks similar to the 915 pointing at one of the hole in the heel bored under the torsion bar. The 915 cable has a large knurled aluminium threaded attachment that goes to the drive output.[/quote]
Gary - do you know if the shaft assembly into the g/b is the same as the 902/1 box? Its missing from mine so will need to find another...…….anyone got one?
