It's a Marmite thing, you either get them or you don't.

Performance wise, early one's are a bit soft but the shape was absolutely groundbreaking. Later one's, like my 928 S4 SE are kick arse. In 1988, Motor magazine desribed them as the nearest thing to a Shelby Mustang that an awful lot of money could buy. Ironic given how much Shelby's are worth now and despite only 42 built and 20 or so left, what they sell for if you can find one. I know of one if anyone's tempted. They'll match a 911 Turbo, easily beat the contemporary 911 Club Sport just as long as you can handle a big car with heaps of power and no traction control.

When I first got into Porsches, purists told me water pumpers were wrong. 3 decades later, anything Ferry signed off on I'm good with. Pretty certain though, that Cayennes and Macans have got him twisting in the ground.

Having had 2 928s I would not have any more. I sort of enjoyed the experience. The early 78 auto was a great thing to look at, but really wasn't much fun to drive. The GT was manual, and was fast, and looked really good. A well looked after, well maintained 928 GT is a great car. Prodigious, mind boggling thirst though. And they are not cheap to fix, but they are not as scary as people make out. Just dont buy a knacker. Buy one with the biggest, fattest history file you can get.
