So the prognosis on the 2.7 engine is not good at this stage.
The upside is this 3.2 with Bosch Motronic 2 engine management system, wiring harness and ECU should arrive next week ready to fit.
s-l1600 (10)
Condition is well documented, know mileage and full service record. Going for plug and play first then decide what needs to be done after that. The additional power may make driving very interesting.

Re: 356 Speedster Flat6 outlaw build
Morning Rich,
The 2.7 needed some work but nothing that could not be fixed, the 3.2 came up at the right price. So hopefully picking it up on Friday, difficult to say no to 231 bhp and 35 to the gallon. Its also got the cpu and wiring harness so should be able to run has stock. Maybe look at fitting the carbs later, it will depend on the height of air blower and air cleaner and if it fouls on the rear deck.
Always wanted to build a stock look beetle with a mid mount 911, i already have full roll cage, a 1303 and a 1200 so just need a gearbox and some steel for a new chassis! The 1303 would be easier because of the irs. I believe one was made back in the day. The engineering would be easier than a Bugster.

Not sure what the lesson is but the reality is there are some less than honest people.
So as agreed with the seller, cash in hand went to pick the engine up. Very early start and a long drive. Amazingly arrived exactly on time. Seller not at home and suddenly disappeared off the face of the earth. Waited around, wasted a whole day and then got home late due to the heavy traffic. Not a great day.
Back to plan A with the 2.7, Mike B is working on a quote.
Really thought the 3.2 was a great option. I doubt another 3.2 will turn up any day soon.
When life deals a lemon find some vodka to go with it! Maybe someone as a 3.2 for sale?

So all systems go on this engine.
Picked up the engine on Wednesday at the same time Mike Bainbridge machined the 915 transmission to accept the crank trigger should I decide to use it. Got back very late so had to leave the engine and transmission in the car until Saturday morning.
A recorded 67,000 miles, I have the video evidence of the original car and engine running, no smoke, correct oil pressure etc
VW Tiguan hybrid

s-l1600 (2)
Might have to sell the injection unit to part fund the paint job
s-l1600 (4)
The plan is to run the engine with
Carbs
38 Chokes
150/ 165 Main jets
180 Main air jets
55 idle jets
123\TUNE USB programmable ignition distributor made for the 3.2
New HT leads/ plugs
915 clutch plate
I would try it with the mototronic DME but finding an ECU and harness seems both impossible and very expensive.
Got some time next week to start strip down for carbs, 123/distributor, RSR engine mount bar, tidy tin work and re-fitting. Not sure how far I will get

Greg.
whitecarrera of this parish had a 3.2 ECU and motronic harness for sale a month or so ago.
I'm not sure if he still has it but could be worth checking.
Great build by the way, I've been following it from the beginning.

Re: 356 Speedster Flat6 outlaw build
Thanks for the ecu tip off, going to give the carbs a go initially, love the induction roar and old skool look
So the engine and gearbox are back in with just a a few issues to finish;
The wilwood clutch slave cylinder which is new decided to blow a seal and leak everywhere. New one on order. Also plan to remake the temporary bracket
The front engine tin is bent on left hand side so the hammer needs to come out of the draw
Waiting on the 123/distributor to be delivered but need to find some non-copper core HT leads at a reasonable price
Need to organise a new oil line as oil flow connector is different position to the 2.7 - Local agricultural store can make these
Ordered new plugs
Ordered a connector for the 3.2 engine loom which needs wiring to my loom. This should be a much neater solution
Need to find / make a left hand side engine heater block off section. Hope to take a mould from the plastic pipes and make a new fibreglass cover.
Drawn the carb inlet gaskets on AutoCad and sent out for water jet cutting. Using 7mm Phenolic plastic
Rebuild the carbs with the new chokes/ jets and fit
Waiting on parts delivery is frustrating but I guess most things will be here next week
Sorry no pics, ran out of time to take any
