The Law, Tax and Mot etc

Hi All, I'm considering a 550 Beck Spyder but need to know more about the law etc.

The car is registered as a 72 and has been given a 72 plate because it has been built as a kit-converted car (old parts added to a new kit) and uses considerably more than 2 original major parts such as engine, gear box, running gear, steering and front beam from the original 72 car.

So can I apply and get VIH tax? It is registered 72 but was built in 09 so i'm not sure.

I know it has to have an MOT as it is extensively modified.

I have been told that if I can show on the V5 that it is a 72 that insurance will be classic car insurance and therefore considerably cheaper.

What can you tell me?

It's registered as 1972 Beck Spyder.

So it sounds like it has been IVA'ed and registered correctly. I am pretty sure that the date for tax and mot exemption will be from when it was IVA'ed

If it was built in 09 on a 72 chassis, ask the owner whether they have to pay for road tax. This will tell you whether the car has been through the IVa process. Going through the IVA you loose your right to historic vehicle tax and have to pay for it. It’s still going to insured as a classic eitherway.

It's not using the 72 chassis but used lots of the main parts from the 72 beetle donor such as the suspension, wheels, gearbox, engine, rear brakes, steering and front beam.

If it was built in 09 then surely it should have to be IVA’D to be 100% legal??

Is it is the silver RHD car with tan interior that was sold at Car Fest in 2015 ?


If so, I think it's classed as a 2009 model which means you pay road tax (as Rich said above) ...

It's the tan interior silver body RHD car. I got the V5 details today. It is SVA/IVA certified as 09. First registered 72 and first uk registered 09. So I assume its an 09 and that's that.

It’s making sense now. So going back to your original question can l get VHT. Afraid not. You will still need to MOT the car also. If it went through SVA/IVA you loose the VHT, that’s the downside. It’s a bugger l know.
