914 megaphone exhaust fitting

Post by Ben Nichols 1979 »

Hi all

The car will come out of hibernation soon. Thinking of fitting megaphone exhausts with cookie cutter ends. I want a more raw sound and the back of my car looks a bloody mess with pipes everywhere.

It's a 2.0 in carbs.

Anyone got any experience. Pros and cons appreciated.

Thanks

Ben

No real experience, but my guess would be loud, probably uncomfortably loud. Good for a racetrack, no good for the street.

My car came with one and it didn't stay on for long. It didn't produce a nice sound and I was glad to get rid to be honest.

I once made a pair of megaphones for a 3.0l 914-6 running a stock 911 SC engine with Weber carbs. The were for the track, not in the UK as they would be too loud. They nearly made your ears bleed, and that was wearing a helmet! Fantastic noise but in this day and age not at all practical.

Here's my old ex-race 914/6 GT with 2.5litre twin-plug engine & megaphones:

Ok. Thanks. So maybe they aren't very practical......can anyone suggest an alternative that will look tidy and sound good?

This is what I have - euro headers with a single box muffler and single out let. There is a mega phone option too.

Mine sounds bloody great - the noise is quite addictive. However it is loud and not particularly comfortable on a long journey. I can only imagine that the megaphone is even louder!!

I have a Turbo Thomas mega-phone style system on my 3.0 and it's LOUD despite some additional baffling in the tailpipes and wadding in the box. It sounds the biz but then I only drive it about 500 miles a year, and the drone at Motorway speeds is terrible. It depends how you are going to use it, and where you live!

When I ran a 4 cylinder, I used a 2 in 1 out stainless 911 box, and Barrie Martin (904GTS) made me some manifolds. It sounded really good (stainless boxes tend to be a bit louder than normal steel) and looked stock.

To be honest, it made a 4 sound like a 6, which worked for me, and was legal at all the circuits including Goodwood at 95db

Thanks for all the replies chaps.

I think I have gone off the idea of megaphones on balance. If I could get twin pipes (like on a 6 cylinder car) I may have gone for it but I think just one may look a bit odd.

I am now thinking about getting the stainless heat exchangers that Design 911 do and a stainless back box. Hopefully it will sound good enough but still be habitable on a run!

That probably sounds more sensible.....

Wayne can you give me some more details of your set up please? That sounds like a very good solution!

Thanks

Right decision. Not just for looks, but also for your eardrums!

I invested in serious noise cancelling headsets for my car, even with a 2 in one out backbox (albeit on webers), it's really noisy in the cabin.

If you do end up emulating Wayne's solution for a 4 cylinder car and want a 2 in one out stainless backbox, I have a Dansk one spare.

Everything is so expensive these days! Thse heat exchangers should last forever though. Would you get a custom back box made?

To be honest I'd like a nice sounding back box but just don't know where to start! I am based in Southampton and don't want to be traipsing around the country trying to get someone to make a custom one and I am worried I'll order the wrong thing!!

Do you have any suggestions who could make a custom, nice sounding (not too extreme but on the loud side) back box that will fit and not rip me off? My existing one is a Bursch one that just looks a bloody mess with everything hanging out, its horrible (and rusty and blowing!) :pukeright:

23e - would your back box fit on the stainless heat exchangers? I assume it will need some sort of piping making to connect up?

As you can you tell I'm pretty confused and need help!

Thanks

Hi Ben

The Design 911 exchangers are stock 914 ones so will require a 914 back box.

The one James has is the same as the one I described above, but will have two bolt oval flanges on the input side and a single tail pipe. 914 ones have two pipes running into the flange, so require a larger 3 bolt flange to be used.

I am not sure how different a 911 and a 914 box is, I suspect not greatly. They are very simple open chamber affairs with nothing much really in there.

I suspect mine sound good was a mixture of using much larger equal length pipes and a stainless box which by being such a simple affair as standard and pretty efficient got the gasses out quickly. The induction noise of twin Webers and straight cut cam gears all added to the overall impact.

So mine was a system built for performance, and what you are looking at is very stock. You might want to talk to Richard (Turbo Thomas) about what he can do on the header and box side. He did my 6 cylinder heater boxes in stainless, so I am sure he will have a performance version for a 4 cylinder with a range of backbox options - or will be able to flange it so you can use James box.

Hope that helps

Or, just noticed you are in Southampton so nowhere near Birmingham.

Contact Barrie and ask him to make you the same as he did for me to mate to James box. He is in Thruxton Nr Andover
