Rally pad recommendations for 2.7RS ?

Post by amallagh »

I've been using Porterfields for about the last 10 years now pretty much exclusively for my motorsport applications. Only thing is that getting them in the UK is never easy so just considering alternatives given I've exhausted my supplies on Rally Portugal Historico.
The Porterfields are great from near cold and great progressive feel and the only downside being terrible squeal when they are anything but cold on light to medium pressure.

So what else ?

Ferodo DS3000
Ferodo DS1.11 #
Mintex M1166 #
Carbon Lorraine RC6 #
Tarox
EBC Yellow or Red Stuff

Anything else ? I anyone has first hand experience of these or any other motorsport pads then I'd be really interested to hear.
Cheers
Andrew

I ran Pagid RS4-2 "Blue" in my 2.7RS spec race, sprint and hillclimb car at the time with great effect and was then and probably now the most popular pad choice amongst the Porsche drivers but i know things change.

Like a lot of the rally guys we use Questmead.
Speak to Alan or Steve, really helpful people and they attend rallies.
Steve competes in a rapid Micra Kit car

I use Carbone Lorraine - used RC5+ for a while, now using RC6.. They appear to be powered by voodoo! Awesome bite from cold, amazing when hot, and don't annihilate discs. The upside of the 5+ is they're fairly quiet and work a little better when cold, the down side is they've not got as much high-end power or heat capacity as the 6's, but this might not be a massive issue for you given the application and lower weight vs. my car (1100kg, near 50/50 weight, used on track). Avoid the old RC5 compound - they released the 5+ to resolve some of the early issues (noise, crumbling, etc) and from time to time the older RC5's do pop up for sale at what looks like a decent price

Padgid - I have some of their pads on my e30 (came with the car, can't remember the "numbers") and I had their old (previous number scheme) blue pads on my 964. In my opinion they're not quite as good as the carbone lorraines (don't quite have the same bite when hot or cold) so it would be hard for me to justify the extra cost vs. CL when it comes to replacement time. That said I've never tried them "like for like" (ie same generation pads on the same car)

I won't use EBC anything after a bad experience - I had some issues with parts which is fine (these things happen), but their support after the fact was shocking so I won't touch them anymore

I believe 911Hillclimber is using CL6 pads on his car (not sure if the lola or the 911) and has positive things to say about them aswell - if he doesn't respond here might be worth shooting him a PM for some input

+1 for CL pads, instant bite from cold, great pedal feel, stopping power and control, using standard S calipers.

+1 for Pagid RS4-2. I use them in my Rally car, they do benefit from being properly "conditioned" (follow the supplied instructions) - I have identical brake components on my S Targa and Rally car (alloy front callipers and steel rears with standard Porsche Discs). The RS4-2s always give confidence from cold and the difference is significant in pedal feel and consistent stopping ability (and they are quiet). The Textars, a good standard pad, which are fitted to the S feel very underwhelming after the RS4-2s.
