Lightweight flywheel and Sachs power clutch - too much?

Post by Northy »

Anyone got any first hand experience of a 3.0 SC with a lightweight flywheel and Sachs power clutch, the alloy pressure plate one.

The rest of the drive train is fairly factory, other than SSIs. The car is mainly fast road use, with the odd track day too.

What do you guys reckon? Go for it or just go standard flywheel?

I have a lightweight flywheel with a Patrick Motorsports racing clutch in the 914/6 - this allows conversion of late engine to early 901 box.

It is a bit of switch, but perfectly useable on the road (as the car now is). No stalling issues like you sometimes find with lightweight flywheels, prob because the car is so light and the motor so torquey, it just moves!

Flywheel definitely makes it more lively, and worth it in my opinion. I can't see you clutch would be fiercer than mine, so go for it. If nothing else, it is a good workout for the left leg!

I also have lightweight flywheel and Sachs alloy clutch albeit with paddle plate now. It has worked very well and does give improved performance due to spinning up more easily. Mine is 1979 SC with SSI's and now fitted with high compression pistons and PMO carbs.
I don't think it compromises normal road running.

FWIW I had lightweight Sachs pressure plate on my 2.2E (flywheel standard) with no negative consequences. The motor certainly spun up faster and it was definitely worthwhile - I would have thought the bigger 3.0 would be more stable on idle etc. if well maintained?

Thanks guys, I've ordered a fennlane lightweight flywheel. Matched to the light clutch it should spin up well.

Putting in a Quaife LSD too, so it should be lovely once back together.
