Age related plate

Post by von Zipper »

Hi guys, I have a '73 911 imported to the UK in 1979. In those days it got a '79 T suffix plate. Has anyone had any experience with DVLA on applying for an age related plate?

Yes, my 1970 car was on a 'x' reg and I just wrote to DVLA and it was changed with no problem but that was 19 years ago. From what I gather the procedure has changed quite a lot and it's now not so easy.

I think Dave (Stretch) has more recent experience and it wasn't a positive outcome.

Of course the other thing that you could do is to buy an age correct number plate and this would give you the opportunity to get a shorter configuration at the same time - I did this also.

Update:

Ralph, i sent the V5 back and asked them to put registered overseas. Manufactured in 1969 in the special notes section 3 box.
This has been done and returned to me, so i might give it another crack.

It just looks so wrong - like a 'Q' plate really.

My car was initially registered as COO 307X - how crap would that have looked?

Hi Guys,

I have a 61 Beetle that came in around the same time - is v plate. I was told if I proved that the car was a 61 chassis etc that they would give me an age related plate. I went through a lot of hassle to get the equivalent to a CofA which the factory didn't have, so got the age verified by the VW club GB. I provided all of the information to DVLA and after a long time I got a letter back saying that they wouldn't change it even though they understood that was a 61 car, but as the rules when it was imported were that it would get a plate based on the year of import it had to stay like that. I haven't done anything else as there doesn't seem to be an appeals process. I would be interested to know if there is any recent experience of getting a better result!

Cheers

How recently was that? Normally this is a very simple procedure but lately the DVLA has become very cagey about the whole VHI deal (vehicle of historic interest, which a 1961 Beetle would be) in light of the changing legislation and are not processing certain VHI-related requests.

HI Keith,

The letter from DVLA was from April 2017. It said that as the car was registered before 1/8/83 then it cannot be changed. :-)

They have changed the date of manufacture to 1961 on the v5

Cheers

Thanks for the replies guys, it confirms that DVLA are making life difficult for some reason, and its not straightforward anymore. I'll let you know how I get on.

Can't you just buy an older plate and transfer it? I've just done that with my 88. Or am I missing something?

No but it ain't much (pennies compared to the value of the vehicle) if you're not too fussy about the number. I put MNH130K on mine last year for less than £120 inc transfer fee.

Think buying a plate is the only option now. I just had my section 3 part added so i didn't get any bollocks when i want historic status.
