Decisions Decisions

Post by chaos »

What to do?

Am in need of a new toy for more everyday use and thinking along the lines of a Cayman with all the toys.

Big prob being funding this.

So which of my babies do I sell ( apart from the wife)

My 1971 LHD 2.4E turned into a 911R tribute running 3ltr SC lump (original engine gone) very light and much modified.

Or my 1985 3.2 Carrera turned into a RS clone.

Both valued around the same £37500 each....

May put both into cars for sale fully detailed or after many flips of coin....lol

Life hard init :)

Your pic, sir:

You are most of the way by having it in Flickr. Just click on the big "forward / share" arrow and choose "bbcode", then cut and paste the text (image tags etc).

I'd keep the R tribute. Much cooler and presumably more hardcore. Nice contrast with a modern sensible Porsche.

I may have a cheap compromise for you to consider. I'm not trying to sell mine, but I have a nearly three year old Mercedes 220 Coupe with AMG suspension and variable rate steering.

It handles absolutely superbly and has slightly better steering than my twelve year old, Porsche maintained Boxster, it's miles quieter, it has four comfortable seats, the rears fold down to make a huge boot huger and so on. Because it has 300 lbs/ft of torque at 1400 rpm, it's as fast most of the time as my Boxster that has 187 lbs/ft at 4,500.

The only reason you can't corner quite as quickly is that the ride is better.

My Boxster is twelve years and 64,000 miles old and has just had a major service. Everything that can be was done and that included replacing crossover pipes, so a £2000 bill. Therefore I considered buying a newish one until I realised I'd have to spend £35,000 plus! I've decided to keep the Boxster and I traded the C180 I had and didn't terribly like for this Coupe which is incredibly good, albeit sounding like a Stagecoach bus. It was under £18,000, so maybe one might appeal to you and enable you to keep the two cars you have.

As my chum with a 964 has discovered, most modern 2L diesel estate cars p155 off into the distance by the time his is up into the power band, or he has to change gear endlessly. My Boxster is torquier than his, otherwise as fast and a lot more economical.

I think you should put both your cars up for sale , and if they both sell well done !
Once you have decided for a change life is too short to mess about .
The Cayman is a good platform for track driving or fast road , I occasionally drive a friend's Cayman R at Spa and it is very capable compared to the 964RS I used to throw around there.

Keep them both and buy a mk5 GTI to be sensible in. Still immensely chuckable, still immensely practical. Will sit all day on the autobahn at 240ish, traffic permitting.

How have we gone from someone wanting a Cayman .... To a crappy merc or a golf ? :) .... That's some way of a depressing the bloke if that's all he's got to look forward too lol:

As old timer says, if you can't decide which to sell , that implies you don't particularly have favourite , so put them both up for sale and see what happens .

I know you didn't ask for suggestions, but in theory, what's the budget for a more modern fun car then ?

Up to £37k?

If you can find a 987 boxster spyder ( probo higher mileage at that price point) , I'd say that would be a great alternative, although if you plan on more daily use the roof might be a problem.

Aston V8 vantage ? Gen2 Cayman ? Are gen2 997's down to that price point yet ?

Average 2.0 diesel rep cars leaving a 964 for dead ... Maybe if your flooring the throttle in the 964 at 2000 rpm, but who drives a Porsche like that .. If that's the way someone does drive it maybe an auto boxed turbo motor would suit them better .

If it were me...
Sell the red one.
Buy the best Cayman gen 2 2.9 you can find with useful options.
Take the Cayman for a good run and realise just how sweet the engine is screaming at 7000 rpm, or an easy cruise and 34 mpg, all in safe comfort.
The white car will wake you up when in the mood for it.

Chaos!

You said you were decided and selling the red one, the white one was never on the cards! That strikes me that you have decided deep down....

I am with you, keep the white one. Remember the blood, sweat and tears after the excursion at Wiscombe? You can't undo history like that.....

Take care mate

Another thought whilst making a brew...

You don't like competing in the red car, so unless you hang up your helmet the white car is the one to keep; unless you were going to rag the Cayman around...? If you do, you might not find competing in leather seats with seat belts that much fun...

Cheers
