Not been able to do any further work on the 108 due to the garage flooding out. I've found the issue and currently repairing as required so hopefully be back in action soon...

I have been meaning to update this thread for some time now and have finally got round to it. Back in early 2016 I was very fortunate to be able to purchase Otto off Des (Bernese). Progress has been slow to start with as I was trying to finish off other projects before starting. Below are some pictures to show what I have been up to.

Otto the day we picked him up from Des

My plan was to start from the back and work my way forward as I knew there was an issue with the gearbox. After a visual inspection it was clear it was going to need some serious work as you could shake the main input shaft and some of the gears were blue/purple from getting warm. I decided to remove the gearbox and take it to a friend who specialises in rebuilding gearbox's. He stripped it for me and gave me a long list of the parts I needed to source; gears, bearings, selector, seals etc. I managed to get all the parts from Senger-Traktorteile in Germany to my amazement and my friend rebuilt it. It was expensive but had to be done.

I then set about getting the axle castings paint stripped. This turned out to be a bit of a disaster. I had forgotten Des had told me he had repaired the one casting and as it was that good I did not spot it. I took them to be paint stripped and forgot to tell the chap about the repair. He chemically dipped them which destroyed the repair. A friend knew someone who could weld cast so I gave it to them to repair as I know cast is hard to weld. I then got the casting back to find it had just been Arc welded :(. I couldn't see any cracks when I got it back so I thought maybe I had been lucky. However within 48 hours a crack had appeared as shown below.

I contacted a specialist cast welder (what I should have done in the first place) to see if they could repair it. They said they could but the initial quote would be from £2000. Luckily I managed to source another casting off German eBay and learnt from an expensive mistake.

Next job was to replace the bearings and seals in the reduction gearbox's. First removed the bearings and gear. Then paint stripped, painted and fitted new bearings and seals

Next job was to replace the brake linings, the old brake linings were a little scored but serviceable but I thought while I've got it apart and everything is new I would change them. Once the brakes were done I could get on with painting and reassembling everything.

Next plan is to split the bell housing and have a look at the clutch and then start on the engine. Unfortunately moving house has paused things for the moment but hopefully will be able to crack on again soon. A big thanks must go to Bernese for giving me the opportunity to carry on with Otto's restoration.

Thanks,

Tom
