Have you checked the hell hole? If there's no rust there you've done well at that price. If there is rust there then who knows!!!

Re: Black with Black interior 1974 1.7 US import
Well I had a couple of hours on Saturday. So tided up my garage and setup my free workbenches, neighbor two doors down who's 80 gave them me from a unit he owns that a company left behind.
I've started stripping the car removing the bumpers which I knew were scrap. The front end is pretty much rust free just a bit under the bonnet rubbers. There's no rust on the front wings which or inside wheel well which I'm well happy about.
The rear is rusted in the boot which I already knew I'll need a boot floor patch.
I also began removing the interior, the drivers door has rusted so will have to replace that. the inner door threshold has also rusted so I'm going to have to either repair or replace the sill.
Once I have the interior all out and the engine I'll know where I stand with the car but its looking pretty good for 2k

Why were the bumpers scrap? They look OK from the pics but can see any detail really.
I 'might' sell mine as I've just acquired some fibreglass bumpers to reduce the weight on my car

The front bumper was badly dented where the drivers side overriders is and also had some rust.Mr Pharmacist wrote:Why were the bumpers scrap? They look OK from the pics but can see any detail really.

The rear bumper looks as though its had some sort of repair done right on the curve where the reg plate sits. Also I'd rather have bumpers without the overriders.
What style bumpers do you have?

Mine are chrome - the rear has overriders but the front doesn't.

Hi Chris,
Welcome to 914 ownership.
For the price you paid on the surface it looks like you did ok.
You need to check these areas for rust.
Around the jacking points (behind sill covers)
Hell holes (below battery tray and same the other side) and look from below too
Behind driver and passenger seats at base of bulkhead, especially around handbrake cable tubes
Under and around pedal assembly
Below fuel tank.
BHCC also have a reputation for putting cars loosely back together that have been in pieces for a while just to make them sell, but without finesse or care.
Your front bumper with no top and 1 rear & 1 front over rider fitted is a good example of this.
Overall, it seems you got the car for a good price and I'm sure you'll get it up together with help from everyone on here. Don't be afraid to ask questions, there's always someone who can help.
Good luck

Yes Nathan,
Got me some new overalls and hat, just need an organ grinder now as I divorced my last one
Was thinking of having the image as my avatar.....

Hi Darren
Thanks for the info I'm going to strip the interior over the next couple of weeks so hopefully be able to see most of those areas.
Love the pic lol

Suggest you work on the basis that nothing is scrap until you have a replacement part in hand.
Take triple the number of photos you think you need, and have a good selection of zip loc bags and permanent marker for storing parts.
My 914 also has a habit of letting air out of its tyres - it must be a Californian thing!
Nice workspace, neat and tidy.

I've decided to keep my camera down in the garage
Zip loc bags and marker will sort those at lunch time I want to get some storage units to mount on the wall.
Yeah really pleased with my garage I had it built last year.

That's a great looking working space! I have a 5 mile drive to my workshop, walking down the garden would speed my work rate up. I reckon I would paint the floor just to avoid dust. And put up a shelf for the kettle!!

Re: Black with Black interior 1974 1.7 US import
Just a question, how did you get a 1974 1.7; the 1.7 was 1970 though 73, and the 1.8 in 74 & 75. Is it a mix of years?

I'm guessing mine must have been one of the last 1.7 and was registered in 74?davep wrote:Just a question, how did you get a 1974 1.7; the 1.7 was 1970 though 73, and the 1.8 in 74 & 75. Is it a mix of years?
