Re: Owatrol anybody tried it
I tried to paint my whole car with their RA85 Aluminium paint and it didn't go very well.

I presume you mean this stuff?veryporky wrote:A classic car journo recommended Owatrol for rust proofing a car that you are trying to keep original, anybody tried the stuff

I purchased some to put on my bare aluminium wheels but ended up using Gibbs instead as after reading up it sounded like the Owatrol cures like a paint once the moisture is removed. How/where are you considering using it?
Re: Owatrol anybody tried it
Thanks,
Yes that's the stuff. It's for my low mileage original split VW bus. Underneath there is a lot of original paint left but also areas of surface rust. If I went with waxoyl it would cover it all up. I want to protect it and still be able to see it. Have also heard finnegans who do waxoyl got taken over a few years ago and the stuff is not so good these days...

Not tried Owatrol
I do like acf 50 for similar purposes. Very easy to work with, seems to work very well.

Looked at acf 50, they recommend re doing it every year. Might try the Owatrol as it looks to be a bit more permanent...

Yes, re-apply every year. That's the downside, although it doesn't take long using my HVLP gun.
Upside is that, because it's just oil (doesn't set at all), you can't do any harm with it. So it doesn't need to be carefully applied. If it gets on paint, just wash off with detergent. If it gets on electrics or engine cases etc it's doing more good than harm.
I deliberately apply to mag cases - they come up a treat and protection there is a good thing.
Sorry, sound like an advert.

Re: Owatrol anybody tried it
Have a look at a company called TimeMAX in Hamburg.
I just received a box full of goods from them and will try it soon.
I saw a treated car at the show in Stuttgart and it was very impressive.
It seems you heat up the thick wax(TimeMAX 1000 and 2000) to 100 degrees and spray it into the cavities and then there is clear wax for the floorpan and wheel wells, this
is a very tough see through wax so you can see the colour of the body.
Sorry too to sound like an advert, but it's worth a look.

Re: Owatrol anybody tried it
Hi Darren
It is looking pretty good even if I say so myself!
This is only due to Barry and Steve at DC coachworks.
Progress has been a bit slow on my part over the last couple of months.
I keep getting inspiration from popping into Gary Cook's place and seeing Adam(Bigfoot)s E being put back together.
His car is same colour as mine and followed mine through Barry"s and then the paintshop.
Now considerably in front.....
Will put some pictures on.
Nick
