Advice, tips and insults… All welcome

Post by King_Jut »

So, some of you guys may know me, others not so. I don’t tend to post that much since I sold my 912, but DDK is still my go to forum for great threads, info, and the general camaraderie. Regardless of the Porsche/non Porsche content — its a great place to be.

So… I wont spin the thread out, so i’ll get to the point:

I love making car films, I love cars, especially cars and drivers with stories., I love driving too. But, I’m not talking car vlogging films, or car reviews. I’m talking about beautifully shot, emotional and engaging stuff.

In honestly, I couldn’t think of a better bunch of guys to ask for some advice… Pointing in the right direction, and possible opportunities on how I can make this happen?

I'm completely at a loss as to what the F#∞K do I do?

Sorry it's not clear to me what you want to do?

However, message jeremyg to see if he will give you some advice. He made a great video of our 356 day out. Started video logs at the BBC and used to be head of documentary programming for the Bristol area so should be able to help (and he lives in your part of the country).

Not quite sure what the question is, but the answer is to just go and do it.

As Neil said, I suspect you and I share a number of interests in this area, and we live fairly close by each other. Maybe we should meet up for a drink sometime soon? I'll PM you.

You can come do a film at mine on the condition you wire in my lights, fit my windscreen, and bleed my brakes while you're here

In all seriousness, might be good to do a thing on people who do the work on these cars, people pushing boundaries, or people who do the stuff behind the scenes..
Without wishing to volunteer anyone, 911 hill climber has owned and developed his 911 over a long period, Barry has done masterful work on multiple DDK cars over the years, "electric classic cars" could be a cracking subject, maybe a "life behind the lens" on Jamie's escapades?

I love the Touring car project you're working on smallspeed, and like you I grew up on Touring cars! Your attention to detail is amazing.

And, that goes for so many of the threads. Just looking at Nicks 2002 project and then racing it! Beautiful stuff!

I guess my main issue is actually finding the right paid work. Heres a recent example: http://www.girardo.com

These guys sell rare and exciting cars, the attention to the garage, settings etc are all well considered, great. But... just look at the little films they make for the cars! WTF!!!

I look at this and shudder... Then think I know I can do better.

Bohams do the same, or have in the past.

So in the first instance put some examples of your work up here, we can then try and advise you more.

I agree that if selling a pricey car (or house), especially with bigger numbers involved, why more people don't commission a decent quality video promo?

Priorities would be that it would need to be low on cheese and hyperbole, high on information though, but the 'emotion' of many subjects could be allowed to shine through. :-)

The other thing is getting commissions to film club events, club drives or hillclimb events, for the organisers. Then putting something together from a day's filming with drone and back of a pace car footage etc..
