my non-Porsche picture of the day

Post by 23e Heure »

The Whitmore GT40 did lose a wheel at speed on the Buonfornello straight, but damage was slight and thy got going again only to hit a kerb on the last lap and lose that same wheel.

They were a DNF but the car was certainly not written off.

Ford sold it to a London Ford dealer a few years later. And then it disappeared, assumed broken up/lost...

Until said dealer died and the car was uncovered in one of his many lockups, in 06ish.

I first saw it racing in 2007 or 08, post restoration at Spa... where it lost a wheel going into Radillon and was badly bent!

All fixed up again by the following season, it's still a regular campaigner in historic motorsports.

You may see it in 2 colours: white and the grey/green (a bit like Porsche leaf green).

It raced in both colours in period. They painted it white for le mans after the 65 Targa.

The previous owner told me colour change is easy on these cars: they had all the (I believe, bolt on) panels in both colours, all they have to do is repaint the scuttle.

It was white when they crashed it at spa. When they fixed it they switched to green.

But no doubt an auction house will find it in a barn soon. And it'll still be 'matching numbers'...

And there the story of GT/111 ended, until September 2006 when the remarkably original monocoque was discovered in a garage in East London. It was, beyond doubt, that of a prototype Ford GT, a roadster to boot and even had the magic ‘GT/111’ chassis plate to prove it.
