You guys don't get out of Porsche world enough !! There is a world of great cars for that sort of money, in fact, you don't even have to spend that, I have bought 4 MX5's in the past 5 years and spent no more than £1000 on any of them, one I bought for £700, spent £500 getting a new mohair hood, doing the sills and drove the nuts off it for a year, sold it BACK TO THE GUY I BOUGHT IT FROM for £2700 !! That is how you get through University !
When I was a student in Australia, I bought and sold about 40 cars, kept under the trader threshold, but had credit cards with a total limit of $60,000 with n visible means of support, I was the only one who finished Uni with no debt and $50k in the bank ! Never spent more than $1000 on anything, still wishing I hadn't listened to my father and bought the 356 Speedster or 246 Dino both of which were for sale for $5000 a pop in 1983. Had just bought a '72 Beetle for $2200, so wasn't a lot even then ! Both were solid cars.
But back to my earlier point, there are tons of cars out there for less than £3000 that are interesting and good fun, in fact my Merc E320CDi estate (X reg with all the toys and 82,000miles) I paid just £2300 for ! I bloody love cars that don't cost any money. How did I ever get into this Porsche lark ! Slope330 you have a lot to answer for !!!
My daughter's on her 4th MX5, non cheap, the last one is new Mk4 and ALL have been great.
2nd one 'died' on a motorway when a young lad buried his mums Citroen into the back of her MX5 while she was stationary in traffic... She walked away untouched.

I am currently not looking at a Porsche as I am really enjoying my SLK32 - I view it as a free car as it cost me a lot less than the profit I made on my 964. £6k for one of 250 UK cars. And you can get the 3.2V6 (no supercharger) for peanuts
