Taking out extended warrantee?

Post by 911hillclimber »

My 2009 Boxster is coming to the end of the warrantee provided by PCT. The provider is Olympic Warranties.

This supplier has sent me a quote for £220 for one year and covers the max of £1000 in each claim, unlimited claims except only one clutch /year.
As ever, there are a lot of potential 'grey/wriggle' areas where I can see difficulties in getting a claim approved, but I was wondering if anyone has a good experience of another or same company?

I am normally sceptical about this type of cover and have never taken it out before on any car, basically because I don't trust any of them.

Any thoughts please?

Graham.

if the work has to be done by Porsche I can't see £1000 per issue getting you very far? that said, at £220 if it covers all the right stuff then its probably worth giving it a try if you have concerns over specific issues with that type of car (ie RMS, etc.). My problem with this type of insurance is it rarely covers the big stuff you'd want covering for, ie £1000 isn't going to cover RMS repair/replacement. I was offered a similar set-up for my z4 when the factory warranty ended, and the offering was pretty weak when you actually read into it..

I asked if they did a "premium" powertrain-only warranty (ie engine, diff, gearbox covered for everything except service - the parts im interested in, covered to the level i'd want) and they came back with a quote of £2000 per year!

As already mentioned how far would £1k go if you had something that required a warranty claim. Probably a drop in the ocean if something major goes bang and that assumes it's covered under warranty in the first place.

Yes, and if I 'spend (un-quoted) more that could rise to £2.5K / claim.

It looks on their papers too good to be true. All components in the engine block and head are covered. If the engine goes due-south even 2.5K will not work, but it is 2.5K!

Might look to see what else is out there.
Might even question if I need this car!

I got a warranty on my 996 C4S when I purchased it as it was included in the price. Wish I had negotiated a bigger discount instead. When I tried to claim for the water pump, which according to the warrantee was covered, they refused to pay due to the cars age and mileage, which was not appreciably different to the age and mileage when I bought it.
The Porsche specialist I use said that was a typical experience. I suggest saving the money and taking your chances given they don't operate warranty companies at a loss so on balance over time you will pay more than you can ever claim back.

A lot of the guys on one of the Range Rover forums swear by Warranty Direct. I've never used them myself, but their cover seems quite comprehensive, and in many cases pay out on full value of an item rather than limiting to £1000/claim. Due to the, er, reliability of Range Rovers, the price is quite expensive at £7-800, I would think a Boxter might be a fair bit cheaper. A tip is to get a quote, then wait for a few days, as they will call you back with a reduced offer.
I should have got one after the LR 3 year one expired, as I spent £3500 in year four, but then haven't had any problems since (now 6 years old)

This is good!

I will see what they quote, but I think I will chance my hand without. If it goes pop I have the time and skills to repair the Boxster, but the parts costs worry me if it is a big issue.

Just done their on-line quote:

£660 but no claim limit.

We used warrantywise for our 6 year old 5 series, they paid out no problem for the air suspension fault we had with it. They seemed pretty competitive..

That was different!

£792 / year, max £6K claim, £50 off me.
08/80 cover = huge amount covered on the car.

Certainly best value/£ of all so far.

Graham I struggle to understand why you would need this cover? Can we firstly agree that the cost of cover is more than the average expected payout? In fact quite a lot more because of admin, middle men etc. Next I would suggest that you with your mechanical know you will be able to get problems fixed cheaper then the average person. Therefore, don't buy the insurance and put the money into a savings account?

The 'idea' only came about because PCT had the Boxster covered and this cover is coming to an end as pointed out to me by the agency providing the cover at the moment.

I've never bothered with this cover for any car before, but was interested to see what is out there and this has snowballed a bit.

As predicted, I've had several phone calls from all the people I asked for a quote on-line from and one has said that there are office approved only incentives available if I call them back.

So, if I took their first quote I pay the ticket price. They will give me money off if I call them.

In other words, we will screw you for the most money, but if you do not take the quoted offer, there is £££ to come off.

Typical modern rip-off-if we -can attitude, and boll!2cks to them.

I can fix almost anything on a Boxster I'm sure. The car runs great and I don't thrash it at all (as the mpg figures show), I have a 911 hotrod for that and the Lola.

It will all lapse and I will run the Boxster as all the other cars, DIY rules.
You take greater care as a result. :)
