Mocktini? 1978 930 Turbo advice

Post by 101sinbad »

bought this a couple of months ago with the help of Colin @ninemeister and finally getting around to deciding which way to go........

The initial idea is to give it a wash, put together the engine, duck tape the hole in the rear wing and get an MOT and drive it.

The car was handed over to a dubious mechanic some time ago for some engine work and subsequently lost its original wheels, some internal engine parts, exhaust, brake calipers and drive shafts. The engine case is the original but needs pretty much most of its internals........and the list is quite long.....and expensive :(

Obviously back in the day if you had one of these you weren't happy listening to music like a mere mortal......you had to listen like a don.......I wanted to keep it all as a little nod to the 80s/90s but decided I'd probably have enough trouble with wiring without having to work out how this little lot goes together. Plus probably a fire hazard.....and undoubtably uses a few bhp.

and yes that is a CB radio in there

Thought the little fella in the middle of these two bad boys was a tweeter.........turns out it was a heater. Image

As with all good restorations.....I'm going to start with the wheels.
I have some 15x7/8's but will try and find some 10's for the back. Not sure I can go wider?

Make a good hotrod that would ;)

10's are as wide as you can go on a Turbo without modifying

As Dusty said that would make a great hot rod. Ditch the hi fi and CB, nice set of wheels and ditch the stripes. Get it running as cheap as possible and have some fun. If you want to do a resto later that's great but go and enjoy it a bit first.

Noooo! Keep the stripes!!!!

I can't quite understand the stereo installation, badly planned and poorly executed.

It's clearly from the early 80s so at the time of install, the car would have been perhaps a few years old and still a very desirable car. I used to do work for car radio shops around this time and the standards for installs were generally very high.

Did someone DIY hack this stereo into a fairly new and valuable super car?

Wow! Great find! Do the bare minimum to make it legal/safe/reliable, keep the stereo for sure, and the stripes of course. Try to avoid washing it if possible.

Coincidentally, just been looking at an unrestored original Martini 930, but that one's the real 'full-house' deal with Martini red/white/blue leather interior, too. Very cool look.

KEEP THAT STEREO... I get that it's a bit ugly and poorly installed BUT you'll never find those bits ever again and it's so 80's it hurts! Even if it's purely for show, leave it in there - when you see old old cars now it's always he period touches that get the interest 8)

Definitely keep the martini stripes, best graphic there is on an 80s turbo.

I'd be tempted to keep the stereo too even though its a crap looking install they do reflect the period so well.

Just needs a correct set of fuchs, make it safe and legal, and then drive the hell out of it 8)

So does nobody care for the CB Radio then, you've got to keep the CB Radio, 10-4 and the martini stripes, over and out
