I went to the Factory launch of the 993 in Spain in 1993 - subsequently ordered a C2 Coupe then in '95 a C2 Cab.

However, subsequently drove a couple of Varioram C4 Coupes and thought they were the nicest. In fact, few years later, sought out and bought one.

Sold it recently though, interestingly because, as a 'classic', I thought it was too good - too accomplished. Bought a 3.2 G50 Carrera, which I had also owned in period, and felt that it added a bit more rawness and driver input for those special drives - plus those gorgeous front wings.

Did quite a few miles in 993s - Europe, lots of laps of the IoM TT Circuit. My C4 had the Soundbox thingy and RSRs, sounded beautiful. It also had the Factory lowered chassis and the lwt 18" turbo twists. Super drive, but it would probably have been even nicer on some lwt 17"s.

Contemporary Porsche models are terrific, but every real 911 fan really has to have an aircooled model in the garage.

Planning on servicing mine this upcoming weekend, what engine oil are people using in these engines, spec, brand? Preferably a known brand which doesn't break the bank, 20L cans etc acceptance. I've no idea what's been in it before more than that its been with OPC, at least that's according to the service book but I've no actual receipts to back that up...

cheers

Cool, we can have a "which oil" thread! This is just like a proper 993 forum now.
Mobil Super 2000 10 W/40 (semi synthetic). For UK ambient conditions 40 is the right viscosity number when at operating temp. Cold viscosity is more debatable, some swear by Mobil1 0W/40.

If yours is anything like mine, it'll do 1500 miles in a year, you'll get it serviced anyway, and the oil that comes out the bottom will look exactly as fresh as the stuff that goes in the top. So much so that I wonder if my chosen service specialist might be just recycling it between garage queens....

How is the car anyway? Who dares, wins?

Cheers, Richard.

I use Mobile Super 3000 X1 5W-40 in the 993 and Mobile Super 2000 10W-40 in the older cars based on advice from my specialist. Seems to work well.
The force is strong in this one ......

Yeah I'm sorry how that came across, I could see that one coming  I'll get some Mobile Super 2000 10W/40.
It's a driver condition car so its going to be used without fear of nicks and dings, hopefully some 15000 km per year.

Cheers

First drive in the new to me 993 this Saturday. It's a lovely car to drive and I must say that I'm positively surprised about the engine character, its just sooo easy to drive quickly on the alpine passes with the torque from low revs to the singing above 5k.

My weekend plans included giving it a proper service but it was just too fun to drive so I ignored that and spent Saturday just hammering it on some beautiful mountain roads instead of in the garage - Sun was shining after all! Then spent the evening cleaning off what looked like 21 years of grime from the engine bay and door sills etc. accompanied with a few cold ones :-)

I'm not entirely sure what manufacturer sport exhaust there's on the car, it sounds great when you're driving the thing actively but as soon as you start drive a bit lazy there's a terrible drone between 2-3k. Think I'll keep my eyes open for an original exhaust to draw less attention on spirited drives - I must be getting old.

The ride height looks pretty good but it clearly eats front wheel arch liners and after a closer inspection its not much left after Saturday's hammering - being a practical man it needs to be raised some 10-20 mm.

I think these cars looks best from behind

I think the front lights still need to grow a little on me but the daughter has approved :-)

Magnus,

Good to hear that you are enjoying the car, it looks very nice.

The problem with the white indicator lenses is that the fog lights tend to discolour and it looks mismatched. I personally prefer the original orange lenses.

This was mine when I bought it

then changed

The ride height does look low on yours, very mean.

In terms of the best angle, the car does look great from behind, side on is always nice as well.

Thanks Tom! but as usual with old cars, better on photos than in reality... Its a high mileage car with some cosmetic issues like worn door seals etc and I keep on telling myself that this thing is for driving and no need to make perfect, but let's wait and see how that works once the 2.2T is back on the road.

By the way, just wanted to thank you once again for borrowing me that book, I know you said they're pretty hard to get by but thought I'd give it the usual amazon browse, cheapest one coming up at 2k, only a DDK:er would borrow a person they've never met before a book for 2k, Thanks! Pm you for the return.

Your car looks absolutely stunning! Fully agree re the look of white indicators, mine must have been changed very presently as they're in pristine condition, which unfortunately can't be said about the yellowing fogs. the problem for me is that I'd need to change the rear ones as well if I go orange, maybe someone wants a swap a perfect pair of front and rear orange for white?

cheers
